' — om a we. — PRY 8 TT Vol. XXII, No. 6 Penn State University, Delaware County Campus Martin Luther King Remember at Delco by Jennifer Darr The Reverend Paul M. Washington was the featured speaker at the Martin Luther King commemoration on January 16th. Reverend Washington is a prominent Philadelphia clergyman and civil rights leader. Washington has been a long time spokesman and activist on issues of human justice and peace. A consistent activist for the poor and oppressed, he has championed the causes of those on welfare, exploited laborers, the homeless, AIDS victims, and victims of discrimination based on race, religion, sex and sexual identities. The Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia, which he was a rector of for 25 years, has played a leading role in fostering and supporting human rights. The Reverend is a graduate of Lincoln University and the former Philadelphia Divinity School. He is the recipient of more than 40 awards, including honorary doctorates from PDS, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and the General Theological Seminary, New York and Temple University. He is also the 1986 recipient of the prestigious Philadelphia Award. The Master of Ceremonies of the commemoration was Charles “Pete” Coleman, the Director of Student Programs and Services. Also speaking at the commemoration was Religious Studies Professor Dr. Bruce Stephens, Secretary of the Student Government Jill Rhodes, and BSL representative David Clements. Reverend Paul M. Washington gave a moving speech on his interpretation of the civil rights movement and the important people that contributed to that movement. Or maybe you’ve always envied people smart enough to invest in a Picasso or Renoir when the artists were relatively unknown. Or maybe you just enjoy looking at good art. If any of the above are true, than don’t worry that you haven’t scheduled anything exciting yet for Spring Break. Put Exhibit 1991 on your calendar! It’s close, it’s fun, and it’s for a good cause. During the week of March 1 through March 10, you can view and purchase the work of sixty-seven area professional artists displayed in Delco’s gymnasium. Exhibit 1991 will include paintings, drawings, and sculptures, as well as limited edition prints. Print signings by five of the artists are Dr. Peter Georgopulos, associate professor of physics, will host the film, “The Powers of Ten”, which portrays universal objects viewed from distances magnified or diminished by the power of ten. Lion’s PAW Awarded by Frances Callhan The Lion’s PAW Award honors selected Penn State employees for “a specific instance of extraordinary performance,” according to Dr. Edward Tomezske, Campus Executive Officer. Performance and Achievementin the Workplace awards are made atirregular intervals, as warranted. “The award gives encouragement, thanks, and public recognition to an employee for an outstanding act above and beyond required duties,” said Dr. Tomezsko. A fifty dollar cash award, a reserved parking place, and a certificate are given to the recipient at a staff meeting. A bronze plaque in the Main Building hallway prominently displays the names of award winners. : According to Alexa Powell, Assistant Regional Director of Development and University Relations, this program is part of a 5-year Strategic Plan for this campus. Its objective is to improve the environment and morale of employees. Now operating for six months, the Lion’s PAW Award program is considered successful. Award winners so far have been: August. 1990; Terry Ernest, Maintenance, for inventing alocking system for the campus MAC's. November, 1990: Lew Needles, Landscape Maintenance, for becoming licensed to use pesticides. January, 1991: Naomi Ware, Business Services, for acquiring computer knowledge. scheduled for March 2 and 3, Following apreview reception for Friends of the University on March 1, a free Private Reception for full time students and their families and for families of students offered admission for next fall will be held March 3. Check your mail for an invitation. A five dollar admission will be charged during the Early Opening, March 2, 8:30- 9:30, and athree dollaradmission thereafter. A catalogue of the artists and their work will also be available. Weekend hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and week days from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. 25% of all items sold at Exhibit 1991 will benefit the Tim Mark Endowment Fund for the Delco campus. Dr. Georgopulos’ fascination with physics was inspired, he said, when at the age of seven he was given a book entitled The Cosmic View. This childhood awakening led him to his chosen field. “The Powers of Ten” will show the entire universe, its scale, and its processes, from various perspectives, all in ten minutes!
