Page 8 — LION’'SEYE — : Sur Xl : <i. t +) — SPINS ports, at Pay Delco Kelly Hess by John Palka On Sunday, April 8, The Delco Athletic Department held its second an- nual Awards Banquet at the Log Cabin Inn, in Media. Tiz Grifith, Athletic Director, said that she expected about 150 people to attend this year. This fact attests to the size and popularity of our athletic program. Sponsored by the Penn State Club of Delaware County, a group of county res- idents who are also PSU alumni, the af- fair recognized all athletes, both Varsity and Intra-Mural. There was no guest Delco’s Young Lacrosse Club Posts Winning Season by John Terrell The following are the results of the first four games of the lacrosse club: Sun., March 11 PSU 24 Moravian 4 Sat., March 17 PSU 17 Masters 13° Mon., March 19 PSU 13 Widener 9 Sun., March 25 PSU 14 St.Joe. 10 Thur., March 29 PSU 10 Ursinus 4 As can be seen, we have had a suc- cessful season so far. The first game against the Moravian Lacrosse Club was an extremely easy win for our team and everyone had a chance to play in that game. However, the remaining games re- quired more work. As a matter of fact, we had to come from behind against the Master’s Lacrosse Club on a chilly, rain- ing Saturday. Master's was quite sur- prised to be beaten by a young, inex- perienced club because the players on the Master's team have a great deal of experience, most of them having played in college. The games against the Widener team and the St. Joseph’s Lacrosse Club were tightly fought contests, and it wasn’t until the end of the fourth quarters that we knew we had won. : The score for the Ursinus game may look like it was an easy game, but it wasn’t. It was a very physical game with our team playing with three men down and their team two men down at one point because of a fight. Both the Ursinus goalie and our goalie had good games in stopping shots. At the end of the third quarter we knew that we would probably win. All of the games have been fun to watch. The credit for the success of this team goes to our talented and experienced starting team. On attack we have Phil Green, Mike Hattersley, and Bryan McDermott. Phil and Bryan returned from last year and play the wing posi- tions on attack. They were strong players last year and they still are this year. Mike is an eighth semester senior finishing his graduation requirements at the campus. Fortunately for us he has experience at the crease attack position and plays it well. Unfortunately, none of these players will be returning next year. Adding to this offensive three are our starting midfielders Dean Ardell, Jim Keough, and Phil Petroll. This is an ex- cellent midfield unit, and they work very well together. Phil and Jim will return next year. Dean hopes to be on main campus playing on the intercollegiate team (NCAA, Division I). Jim is a face- off specialist which helps us control the game from the face-off. All three help at both ends of the field, as well as in the transition game. These three, plus our attack, are what makes the team so strong offensively. Credit is also due to our starting defenders Don Forcey, Eric John, and Scott Strycharz. These players, along with our midfielders, force turnovers, stop shots and initiate clears. Behind the defenders is our starting goalie, Russ Ogden, whose best game so far was the Ursinus game. Russ’ experience has been in box lacrosse, and he is still get- ting accustomed to field lacrosse. Our only returning defender will be Don. This defensive team is certainly part of the reason that we are a winning team. I would also like to give credit to our second midfield unit which regularly provides rest for our first midfield unit. They are Brian Honish, Joe Irwin, and Charlie McDowell. Brian is our general purpose utility player. If need be, he can Volleyball Team is Victorious The men’s volleyball team at Delco is having a winning season with a 6-5 record, which is a tremendous improve- ment over last year’s season. “We're do- ing really well this year,” said Coach Robert Saba in a recent interview, ‘‘con- sidering last year we won only one game — and that one was by luck!” High point of the season was a recent eight-school tournament held at PSU Berks campus with such challenging teams as Millersville, PSU York, and PSU Harrisburg. But the Delco team emerged victorious. “We made it to the final round and had to play Millersville,” explained Coach Saba, “although we had beaten them earlier in the tourna- ment. In the championship match we won the first game, lost the second, and were down 14-8 in the last game. But the team showed a lot of character, pulled together, and came back from a 6 point “deficit to beat Millersville and win the tournament!”’ i : ~ Looking ahead to the Final Tourna- ment for the Men's Intercollegiate Volleyball League, being held at Villanova April 7 and involving twelve teams, Coach Saba predicted, “If we play in top form, hopefully we can place in the top four, maybe even get a third place.” Going into the Final Tournament, Delco has posted victories against six other schools: Haverford, Spring Garden, Temple, Cabrini, Lehigh, and University of Delaware’s second team. Losses were to Eastern, LaSalle, North- eastern, Swarthmore, and Delaware's first team. But the Swarthmore and Nor- theastern matches were close, both go- ing to five games, with the final one be- ing really tight. “If we played Northeastern now, I think we could beat them,” observed Coach Saba. “The team has really im- proved since the beginning of the season.” And even the loss to Delaware’s first team, a league power- house, was something of a victory, ac- cording to the Coach. “We played a good game; it was not a complete blowout.” The Delco team has been praised by other schools’ coaches as being very cohesive. “Everyone contributes. Each game is a real team effort,” added Saba. “We're also encouraged by the stu- dent turnout for the games. That’s been a big improvement over last year too.” capably fill in at defense. Brian will not be here next year, but Joe and Charlie will be. The rest of the players who help us practice and will fill in if there is injury or absence are: Brian Burke at midfield, Matt Kleinman at goal, Chris Cappello at attack, Phil Smolcynski at midfield, Mike Ackenbruck at midfield, Rick Firth at attack, and Jeff Wolff at defense. These players deserve credit for coming out regularly and providing depth for the team. The remaining games are as follows: Sun., April 11 4PM, A Academy of New Church Thur., April 19 5:30PM, Lehigh H Sun. April 22 2PM, H Temple Come out and watch some of our home games. This is an exciting team to watch! BASEBALL BRIEF April, 1990 Athletic Department Holds Second Annual Banquet speaker this time, but a selected member of the Penn State Club said a few words. During the proceedings, every sport cited an outstanding participant. Also, Dr. Haynes, Academic Director, presented Student Athletic Awards. These went to students with a 3.0 or higher GPA who are active in sports. Coaches introduced their respective teams, while Barbara Rostick introduc- ed the Intra-Mural teams. ~ The Awards Banquet was a fitting end to an outstanding year. Men’s Soccer and basketball were both champions, and Women’s Basketball took fourth place in their league. Men’s Volleyball recently ended with a first place in a tournament held at the Berks Campus, and the Men's Lacrosse, playing against four year colleges, are as of this article undefeated. The Lion’s Eye would like to congratulate, on behalf of the entire campus, all of our wonderful athletes on an incredible year. Great job!! Congratulations to All DELCO SPORTS TEAMS. It's Been A Great Year! Wow! Things Sure Do Change by Steve Reiff Oh, how things can change, and change they do. At the end of last season, the Delco Baseball team was in a state of grief. With a record of 5-18 they weren't doing so great. But, look out, because here they come, and boy are they roaring to the plate. In the opening game against Neu- Special Olympics Seek Students’ Help in May On Saturday, May 5, 1990 the Special Olympics Track and Field Meet (Sum- mer Games) for Delaware County will be held at the Springton Lake Middle School beginning at 8:30 a.m. (Raindate: Sunday, May 6 at noon). We are in need of many volunteers to make this a special day for our athletes. The Pennsylvania Special Olympics is a non-profit organization offering sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to all mentally retarded children and adults. This upcoming meet is structured to test and improve their skills through competition, to celebrate their achievements and reward their hard work. : Special Olympics is a community sponsored volunteered organization. Our program exists through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and service organizations. If you are able to give us your support we are confi- dent that the overall program for our Special Olympics will be more suc- cessful. For more information please see Mrs. Trainor in Room 106 or call either Lynne Storti at 328-2780 or Delaware County Special Olympics at 449-2199. mann the Boys of Baseball rolled over the first year team to demolish them 18-1. Their current record is 6-0. Then, after 15 straight losses to PSU- Ogontz, the Delco Lions swept a double header with scores of 4-2 and 4-1. As you can see, this team is hot, and Coach Diskin is hoping they can win their con- ference this year. This team has beaten all of their op- ponents by a total score of 61-12, and on- ly three games were as close as 3 runs. Coach Diskin has high hopes of winning the division and conference titles. Some members of the team are: Jay Scally, Mike Serth, Joe Freynik, Ed Fritz, Rob Lahrman, Bill Rankin, Keith Berry, Rob Russell, Bary King, Mark Herkert, Brian Marshall, Matt D’ Alonzo and Sam Gorgone. The starting pitchers have been a solid force in the play of this team. As with most baseball teams, if the pitching is not there, then you have to rely on the offense to win games. And it takes more than that to win. After last season it is quite nice to see a winning and powerful team. : Spring Tennis Opens Delco’s Women’s Tennis Team, with an even record of wins and losses, is looking ahead to the end-of-the-season Tournament for Commonwealth Cam- puses to be held at University Park April 22 and 23. Prior to that, though, the team has some tough competitors to face, but they are optimistic. “I think we'll win most of our matches,” said Coach Tix Griffith. “Everyone on the team plays hard and does her best.” Figuring prominently in the victory over PSU Hazleton was first singles player Kathy Shane. She was supported by teammates Shanley Steeves, Pam Snyder, Maria Pardini, Dale Robins, Mary Varano, and Monica Whelan. Looks like a winning combination!
