Page 4 — LION’SEYE — April, 1990 oP nd R EDITORIALS Taking Time Out by Chuck McCarthy News. What does that actually mean? Well, if the '90s keep going the way they are, it will become another word for ‘‘shocking.”” Within the last mon- ths we have witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Com- munist government in many countries. And Mandela has been released. But what about here at Delco? Have we made strides that would be as im- portant, but on a smaller scale? That is a question that each of us has to answer from his/her own experience. For my part, I think we have much to celebrate. Es ; We have our new Student Program and Services Director, Mr. Charles Coleman. He has been given the reins of control, and he is surely the person you want to talk to if you have something you would like to see done on campus. His door is ‘always open.” Then there is Wanjiru Kamau, the new Retention Counselor for Delco. Not only is she aware of the workings of the Penn State system, but she knows how to make it work for the benefit of the STUDENT, and when I say ‘‘student,”’ I mean all of us. Now I would like to thank all those persons involved in making this paper come out on time, like Mrs. Barbara Daniel, who plays such a vital part and never seems to be appreciated. I don’t think I'd be able to get the front page put together without her. Thanks for all that you have done for the entire campus. Also, to Mr. John Terrell, who is out there getting us ads, classifieds, basically allowing us to exist, thanks a lot John. And thanks to Ms. Susan Ware, the individual who is always bringing to us the facts that we really need. To Ed and his advisors, thanks for allowing us to function in the manner which we do. And most importantly, thanks to my staff: the in- dividuals who give the paper their all whenever I ask them for it. Also, the baseball team deserves a pat on the back, because at the present time they are undefeated, beating the Ogontz campus in a double header. Finally, cheers to the lacrosse team for the success they have attained from the beginning of their season. And on a personal note, thanks to all those who helped me during the presidentical campaign. I won't let you down. Letter to the Editor To the Editor: : . Tony Watson. Your article only credited I want to thank you for your recent ar- ticle in the Lion’s Eye, on the Cultural Awareness Week '90. It really helps to get the word out to students and the en- tire campus community about Student Programs and Services events, and we thank you. This week of special events, Cultural Awareness Week, was planned by a com- mittee consisting of Wanjiru Kamau, Beverly Lindsey, Sylvia Schaffer, and Beverly Lindsey, when in fact these events were planned, coordinated and implemented by all four of these in- dividuals. I think they each deserve recognition for their fine work. Thank you again for mentioning our programs in the Lion’s Eye. Mary B. April, 1990 Kelly Hess Chris Smith Patrick Kim John Terrell THE FRONT DESK by Ed Tomezsko Campus Executive Officer One of Dr. J's rules of life is that you cannot throw a boomerang away. The theory of a boomerang’s flight path makes that rule obvious. Let me put a different twist on that rule in the form of a question for you to ponder: why would you want to throw a boomerang away? You could simply put it down and a boomerang will wait for you to return. We seem to live in a throw away society. Mobile Oil just got snookered with the “biodegradable” label on its particular brand of trash bag. It seems that the degradeability of the bag is no better, no worse than any other trash bag — the bags and the trash in them seem to last forever. Everything should be ‘‘convenient’’ and ‘““quick’ so that we can have time to do more of the other things in our lives. What are these things? More time to do what? Hurry to the next place to do what? This year started out to be the best year in the life of our young campus ever. We were going to get things done here because we were ready. There were only a few open jobs on staff and most of the faculty were in place. The good group of Student Government officers were in place and even an Adult Student Organization was ac- tive. Lots of student clubs were moving forward. Then it started. ‘“‘How are we going to get this or that done? We just don’t have the time/money/people to do it.” We hired a few new staff and faculty. It continued: ‘“‘How are we going to get this or that done? We just don’t have the time/money/people to do it.” The campus budget plan was under constant scrutiny for errors/oversights/math mistakes. Bad jokes came to be about ‘the plan.” The end of the fall semester gave us some relief in terms of more time and a vacation from the campus. We hired a few more people. Even in the new year, it was present: “How are we going to get this or that done? We just don’t have the time/money/people to do it.” IT began to have a life of its own until last week. We found a boomerang which we do not want to throw away! Last week, we completed an analysis of our plan and our budget. : IT turns out to be a year which IS the best this campus has ever had. Our plan was followed and enough money was available to do most of our priority activities. Stu- dent Government provided good leadership. The faculty did an extraordinary job and received individual recognition in the form of the Atherton Teaching Prize awarded to Dr. Franz, soon to be Associate Professor of History. The staff kept things in order and comfortable for the students. I found it an unusual feeling to sit back and see a job very well done by a lot of really good faculty, staff, and students. Each of you should enjoy the success of the campus community because each of you deserve the feeling. This is one boomerang that we intend to keep and an use again next year. We'll find it just were we put it down; not everything needs to be thrown away. WEY DUDE | Join the Lion’s Eye Staff! Fu
