Page 8 — LION'S EYE — November, 1989 Undefeated Soccer Team Takes League Title It took 4 hours and 15 minutes of grueling play; it took 7 overtimes; but the Delco Soccermen finally wrestled the Conference title from arch-rival Ogontz, 3-2, in a heated play-off game at Univer- sity Park on Sunday. Two goals by Steve Bucci and one by Steve Fountain gained the narrow victory. DELCO IS NOW #1! Out-scoring their opponents four to one in a sixteen-game season, Delco’s soccer team ended their regular season of play undefeated with an outstanding 15-0-1 record. Their 6-0-1 record in the Com- monwealth Campus Athletic Conference earned them a tie for First Place with PSU Ogontz. This perennial arch-rival battled our team in double over-time on October 3 to produce Delco’s only tie in an otherwise unbroken string of wins. Delco’s outstanding season was spark- ed by sophomore Steve Bucci’s con- sistently strong offensive effort. He scored 32 of the team’s total 62 goals during the season, and also provided 11 assists. Freshman Paul Kirkegaard con- tributed 11 goals and 15 assists, while sophomore Mike Pelligrine scored 7 and assisted on 8. Freshman Steve Fountain added 6 goals to the season’s total with 4 assists. Also contributing to the season’s superb scoring effort were Steve Benz, David Trainor, Brian Cody, John Constantine, Jeff Ballas, Brian McDermott, Brian Sutton, Pat Greer and Tim Thompson. : The defense was outstanding through- out the season, keeping their opponents’ total goals to no more than 3 per game while Delco scored 5, 6, 7, even 9 goals a game. Stand-out goalie Jon-Eric Dale posted 6 shut-outs during the season! Other defensive action was supplied by Rich Crystie and Pat Walsh. The team also benefited from out- standing coaching by Allen Miller, who successfully led the team to their first undefeated season. Delco Courtmen Finish Fall Season Delco’s men’s tennis team opened their season this fall with a 9-0 sweep over PSU Hazleton, but failed to repeat that performance and ended the season with a disappointing 1-6 record overall. Their busy September schedule (7 matches played in 20 days) included close losses to PSU Ogontz, PSU Al- toona, PSU Wilkes-Barre, and PSU Berks, all at a score of 4-5. The team also fell to PSU Mont Alto (0-9) and PSU York (3-6). Each match included six singles and three doubles games. Sophomore team member Stephen Scaperotto called the Berks match the closest. Delco “played hard and looked good,” he said, but didn’t come through. “However, the team was better all around this year,” he added. “We work- ed harder. And next year looks good.” Returning next year will be freshmen Joe Hoffacher and Brian Marshall, who stood out this year as 1st and 2nd singles respectively, posting personal records of 4-3, and 5-2, as well as a winn- ing 4-3 record in doubles play. 8th Singles David Desko should also be returning. Sophomores Chris Pierson and Ted Schmidt, the 3rd and 4th singles on the team, posted 1-6 and 4-3 records respec- tively, with a 2-5 performance in doubles action. 5th singles Burt Socia, also a sophomore, compiled a 3-4 personal record for the season, while Stephen Scaperotto was maintaining a 4-1 record before being sidelined with an injury. Sophomore Mike Lawler (1-0) and David Desko (0-1) stepped in to replace Scaperotto. The team agreed that good coaching by Athletic Director Tiz Griffith ‘‘made the ‘season much more fun” than the record indicates. «se £7 a Champs: S. Bucci, P. Kirkegard, S. Fou Gi Bh ntain, T. Facing a challenging season of twenty-three mat- ches in five weeks and competing in two leagues, the Lady Lions posted a 9 win -14 loss season overall. According to sophomore team member Pam Snyder, “This year’s . season was a great improvement over last year’s when the team didn’t win any games.”’ In the EPCC Championship Tourna- ment to break the three-way tie, Delco beat Philadelphia Community College, who then beat PSU Ogontz, who had beaten Delco. So the three-way tie re- mained! Pressed to declare a winner, the league turned to total points and percen- tages amassed during the season, and the Delco Lionesses lost out. According to Snyder, the team’s most exciting game was the October 13 win over Philadelphia Community College because it gave the Lady Lions their spot in the first place playoffs. Other wins during the season were posted against Delaware County Community College, Bucks County Community Col- lege, Montgomery County’ Community College, PSU Scranton, PSU Hazleton, Sports Commentary Pro Sports Need Reform by Steve Reiff In pro sports today, the athletes are no longer happy-go-lucky players. The players of today want the big contracts for the big money. Randall Cunningham got a new contract after the second game of the season, and since then he has not played the same. Pro sports are also lenient on their drug policies. They say if you are suspended three times for drug use, you will be dismissed from the N.F.L. A lot of people believe that if you are caught a second time you should be dismissed. If you aren’t cured the first time that you go to rehabilitation, then you didn’t try to be cured. If you dream of being in the N.F.L., then you better make sure you know what you're doing. No longer can you get away with being good at your posi- tion; you have to be the best, have tremendous foot speed and a good knowledge of the game itself. If you don’t like pain, then don’t be a football player. There are some players out there who just want to go out and hurt somebody, or put them out of sports altogether. This type of person is good at his job and does what needs to be done. They are also the ones who get the big bucks. So I feel that the N.F.L. should set a few more rules for the players who try to kill other players and revise their drug policy to better help those players who nood it. and PSU Ogontz. Delco’s toughest opponent was PSU York from the Commonwealth Campus League. Losses to them and to the Ment Alto, Hazleton, Berks, Wilkes Barre, and Schuylkill campuses kept the team from ranking high in that league. Sophomore Shanley Steeves served as team captain and was a standout in com- petition. Her excellent serving and con- £4 sistently strong skills sparked the team throughout the season. Her talented teammates included sophomores Kathryn Bozman, Laura Bradley, Lisa Carman, Cindi Kugleman, Pam Snyder, Shanley Steeves, Alissa Urick, and Anna Welch, and freshmen Deborah Etsell and Denita Wright. The team was coached by Joann Brophy and Dan Doran. : Delco’s winning women’s volleyball team: (front row) Pam Snyder, Alissa Urick, Anna Welch; (2nd Row) Lisa Carman, Shanley Steeves, Cindi Kugelman, Laura Bradley; (3rd Row) Kathy Bozman, Debbie Etsell, Denita Wright.
