As a sleeping aid, United States is twice as. potent as Sominex and not at all addic- tive. This program is talky, pretentious, ponderous and overblown. It is one of the worst shows of the year. United States is the brain child of Larry Gelbart, the creator; of M*A*S*H*. How Gelbart could put together a series of consistantly high quality such as M*A*S*H* and then follow that success with a mess like United States is hard to conceive. Nevertheless, he’s managed to do just that. United States concerns the troubles and hang-ups of Richard and Libby Chapin (Beau Bridges and Helen Shaver), a married couple in their early thirties. Richard is a white collar worker; Libby is a housewife, They live in the suburbs and. have the almost every way, Richard and Libby approach the stereotype The idea of characters in a TV program discussing issues usually swept under the rugis a good one, and it can work — look at All in the Family. But whereas the Bunkers made us think by making us laugh, the obligatory two children. In . of what the “average’” middle- - American couple is like. They also approach dullness. Each episode follows the same pattern: a problem is in- troduced minutes then Richard and Lib- ‘by sit around discussing it for the next twenty-five. As you can guess, this makes for an ex- tremely dull half-hour. One even looks forward to the com- mercial break. Pitt Game Changed UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. — The Penn State-Pittsburgh football game has been moved . back six days to accommodate national television coverage. The 80th meeting between the Lions and the. Panthers, originally scheduled for Satur- Chapins try to make us think by boring us into insensibility. In addition to this, the dialogue in the series is far from cleverly written, a fatal flaw in a show that is nearly 100 per- cent talk. Here's an example from one of the show's ““lighter’’ moments: Richard: “Did you know broccoli is a cabbage?” Libby: ‘Only you would know that. Besides, if you haven't seen them in bed together I wouldn't go spreading that around.’ Brilliant, eh? When people watch TV, they want to be entertained. Merely because a program is intended to inform does not mean that its value as entertainment should be eliminated. Unfortunately, this is the case. with United States. On the plus side, Bridges and = Shaver are capable performers. Sadly however, their talents are : wasted in a disaster such as ~ United States. . So, if you're looking for something to watch at 10:30 on in the first five day, Nov. 22, will be held the following Friday, Nov. 28, in Beaver Stadium. ABC-TV will air the game at 1 p.m., with kickoff slated for 1:10 instead of the scheduled 1:30 start. ed The game has been _ rescheduled - almost annually during the latter part of the football season. Last year the contest was switched from Nov. 24 to Dec. 1. The game has been televised nationally since 1974. —The Daily Collegian ©0000-0000 O00 Dh Sb Sn Sn on on an Zn an an Sh on ono on NORTHEAST (€ 5 women CENTER | ABORTION SERVICES J FREE PREGNANCY TESTING e Abortion Procedures @ Options Counseling ® Gynecological Care Immediate Appointment Available CALL: (215) 464-2225 In.
