FX 3 January 3, 1980 Lion's Eye Page 3 Music of the 80’s Rock and Roll Will Never Die If you are the type of person who just loves to hear the same sound from a group, then the last part of the 70’s catered to your musical taste. Who can say more about groups like the Cars, Boston, the Police, and Van Halen - who each have that unique sound that is found in every song they play. Maybe unique isn’t quite the word; perhaps repetitious is a more accurate description. Each one of these groups has some particular pattern in their music that makes the listener aware of which group it is from practically the first chord played. Of course, one could say that all groups have some distinguishing quality in their music, but when this quality or sound is found throughout every song, the music becomes monotonous. Boston is the veteran of this monotony-type music with the “Cars, the Police, and Van Halen building up quite the same “reputation despite their newness. However, I don’t think these ‘‘same sound’ groups will be as prominent in the 80’s as they were in the late 70's. The “old faithfuls’’ of rock-n- roll and the stars of the new rock-n-roll mode called ‘New: Wave’ will dictate in the 80’s. Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones are both coming out with albums in the beginn- ing of the new year. Therefore, the 80’s should start out with a trend that will extend over at - least the entire decade, a trend that will consist of good, solid ~ rock-n-roll. This will be quite a _ delightful change from the ex- perimental, artificial musical deviations that came out of the 70's. I'm mainly speaking of - disco music, if the two words can be justifiably stated in the same phrase. But we won't “have to worry about much musical devastation in the 80’s because New Wave will be there to constantly remind us of what rock-n-roll is really about. New Wave came into com- mercial acclaim in 1978, when its most prominent star, Elvis Costello, began to get well deserved credit for his musical accomplishments. New Wave is not only a transformation of rock-n-roll, but it also is a re- discovery of the ‘raw -root sound’ represents a desire to return to a more simplistic music that’ was typical of the rock-n-roll in the 50’s, which is in direct con- trast with the ‘glitter and theater rock” that the 70’s seemed preoccupied with. New Wave started as a secret revolt against disco with the groups and their fans gathering in small clubs, basements or garages to rebel against big stars, big bands and big disco. This was also characteristic of the 50’s rock, which was anti- glamour and anti-star, which makes it quite obvious that New Wave's inspirations go back 20 years. A half dozen bands are cur- rently dictating to New Wave, but they all seem to be playing behind the popularity to Elvis Costello who has released three albums so - far. Blondie is perhaps the next popular New Wave band; it runs on the pro- vocative energy of their lead singer Deborah Hari. Talking Heads seems to express an in- tellectual art-rock that tries to explain what modern life is all about. The Clash, on the other hand, represent an extreme ele- ment of New Wave that originated from the British phenomenon known as ‘‘punk rock’. They convey an almost violent message about angry punk politics. The Ramones, another New Wave band, are characteristic of a loud, rock-n- roll dance band. Devo is perhaps the strangest looking New Wave band with its musi- cians dressed in radiation suits and mocking life in the nuclear age. However, no matter how different these groups may be, they all draw from the same basic inspiration: the original energy of rock-n-roll. Since rock-n-roll has always been known to borrow from the past to contribute to the pre- sent, I don't see this trend ever ending. So just as Chuck Berry borrowed from country western and rhythm and blues and as The Rolling Stones borrowed Best Flicks of the 70’s Here is a list of the Academy Awards for Best Picture presented * during the 1970s: 1970 - 1971 - 1972 - 1973 - The Godfather 1974 - The Sting 1975 - The Godfather Part 11 Midnight Cowhoy Patton The French Connection 1976 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 1977 - Rocky 1978 - Annie Hall - 1979 - The Deer Hunter MUSE Album Released Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) recently releas- ed its No Nukes album, a collec- tion of twenty-seven songs by eighteen artists. B- ball Team to Play First Home Game The Delco Men's Basketball team lost its first game of the season 101-88 in overtime to Northeastern Junior College last month. The Lions picked up their first win of the season by crushing Williamson Trade School 93-70. The team’s se- cond loss of the season came at the hands of Mont Alto Cam- pus, or perhaps the referees (and that term is used loosely). The one-sidedness of the of- ficiating can be illustrated with the following statistics: Delco scored 14 more points from the field than Mont Alto, despite losing 97-96; and Delco had on- ly one trip to the foul line in the entire second half! “I think it was a real home job,” said Coach Ron Case. The Delaware County Cam- pus team must face a great deal of adversity just to play through the season because of the lack of facilities on campus. The Lions have played one- third of their schedule (6 games) on opponents’ courts before the first home game this Saturday. The team plays its home games at Northley Junior High School in Aston while the team practices at the Media Boys from Chuck Berry and Devo from The Rolling Stones, there will be some band borrowing from Devo and other New Wave bands to make another type of rock-n-roll. This process will continuously revitalize rock music and will keep it alive forever. —Carol D'Agostino Club in Media. Because of this, the Lions won't really have a home-court advantage since most of the players have never played at Northley. Despite the setbacks, Coach Case is optimistic. “I think we can win games in this league,” he said. *‘Our team is beginning to realize that aggressive defense and ball-control on of- fense will win games.” In its most recent game, the team beat Valley Forge Junior College 77-72. The Lions play Worthington- Scranton Campus in their first home game Saturday, January 5 at 3:00 p.m. Directions to the game are available from Coach Case in the Physical Education building. —Bill Quinn SPORTS SHORTS Thanks Anyway In its December 15, 1979 issue, the Sporting News named Penn State senior Mike Guman to its list of honorable mention All- American defensive backs, despite the fact that Guman has never played at the defensive back position. “My roommate was reading it and tripped over my name -among the defensive backs,” having played the position.” Guman said. ‘It surprised me a little not Guman played tailback in last month’ s Liberty Bowl game in Memphis, Tenn. In his four years at Penn State, Guman has moved from tailback to defensive halfback, to tailback, to wide receiver, to tailback. ~ Bahr Kicks Pitt Place-kicker Matt Bahr, 1978 graduate who holds amo all of Penn State's kicking records and now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, commented on the Nittany Lions’ 29-14 loss to Pitt last month. Bahr was quoted in the Pittsburgh Press as saying, “We have to lose to them once in a while so we can keep them on our schedule.” {1 High Points 2 Penn State recorded its highest number of points with a 109- 7 victory over Lebanon Valley in 1920. The highest opponent score was recorded-on a 106-0 loss to Lehigh in 1889. The team’s longest winning streak was 23 games (1968-1970). The Lions lost 7 games - in a row in 1931 - the longest losing streak.
