BSL News The Black Student League (BSL) is sponsoring several in- teresting activities in the future. The BSL will sponsor a long: cept is designed to honor outstanding members of the club. Because of the small class enrollment, students are fortunate to be able to ex- perience intellectually stimulating and comfortable in- teraction with instructors. Rarely, however, does this in- teraction go beyond the solving of a calculus problem or the criticizing of a short story. An even more intimate and stable relationship with our teachers could result from gaining in- sight into their personal lives. In affect, finding out what makes them tick. With this in- formation, we can relate to our instructors by seeing them as people who were once students Outing Club News The Outing Club sponsored a trip to Blue Rock Campground near Kutztown, Pa. October 19 through 21 for a weekend of hiking, camping out, and relax- ation. Fifteen club members, as well as Instructional Services Specialist Dennis Ausel and Assistant Dean of Student Af- fairs Richard Shaffer, went on the trip. Highlights of the weekend in the wilderness included hiking, cave exploration, and ghost story-telling around a campfire at night. Dr. Sorkin is teaching - his second year at Penn State. Those who have or had taken courses taught by Dr. Sorkin are aware of his satirical wit, ir- refutable arguments, and almost perfected command of the English language. Dr. Sorkin is originally from the New York suburb of New Rochelle. He attended Cornell University where he gained his Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree in English. Dr. Sorkin originally began his college career as a physics major. But he abandon- ed his study of magnetism, mo- tion, and centripetal force to in- dulge in the reading of drama, tragedy, and comedy. His learning continued at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he achieved his Ph.D. in English. While at Cornell, Dr. Sorkin met his wife Nancy. Tkteir first encounter was while they were distributing political leaflets on Cornell's campus in the early 1960's. Nancy Sorkin is cur: rently an instructor at Temple University in Philadelphia. The Sorkins have two children aged six and ten. In Other Eyes... ...0One Year Ago The following stories appeared in the November 3, 1978 issue of the Lion's Eye. * Dr. Edward Eddy, acting president of the University, ha- ordered a study of the consequences of arming the Police Service Officers at the University Park campus. The interest in the safety of the officers is a major argument in this controversial issue. Although the officers take regular police training courses, they are required to respond unarmed to emergency calls. Criminal acts with weapons have occurred with increasing frequency at the main campus. * The Outing Club traveled to French Creek State Park for a weekend in the wilderness’ October 13-15. Activities included fishing, hiking, touring Hopewell Village, and watching the World Series games on Dean Linder's portable television! * Yaacov Pavan, the Consultant General for Isreal in Philadelphia, visited the Delaware County Campus October 18 as part of the Artist and Lecture Series calendar.
