Vol. X, No. 5 Pennsylvania State University, Delaware County Campus January 22, 1979 Bus Service To Campus Needs Support The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Au- thority (SEPTA) now serves Penn State students with three bus routes to the Delaware County Campus. SEPTA officials will evaluate the use of this service and decide whether or not there is a need for bus ser- vice at the campus. Students are urged to support this service. Schedules for each route are available in the Office of Student Affairs. Route 70 ...... from Feltonville to Lima (Penn State) via Chester, Upland, Brook- haven, Aston, and Granite Run Mall. Route 77 ...... from Chester to Media via Park- side, Aston Township, and Gran- ite Run Mall. Route 80 ...... from Chester to Broomall via Media. Base fare on SEPTA’s three transit divisions is 50 cents. Transfers from one vehicle to another within divisions costs 5 cents. PennDOT To Replace Cloverleaf Span Near Campus The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) plans to replace the bridge that carries Middletown Road (Route 352) over Baltimore Pike (Route 1) this Spring. PennDOT’s plans include re- moval of the top of the abutements and construction of a new deck. Although the state’s plans call for a two-lane structure, Middletown Township Council is requesting a four-lane replacement because of the ter- rifie traffic problem at the cloveleaf. The road may be widened slightly during construction, but the replace- ment is “for safety reasons, not for traffic,” according to a PennDOT official. Route 352 will be closed during the entire period of construction, and both Route 352 and Baltimore Pike will be blocked at one point. De- touring of traffic will be a major problem since pos- sible alternate routes such as Rose Tree Road are ex- tremely narrow for high volume traffic, Harry MacCartney Lion’s Eye On Sports Tide Rises Over Nittany Lions The Sugar Bowl game on January 1 proved not-too- sweet for Nittany Lion fans. With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, the Lions had an op- portunity to clinch the national championship. Ala- bama stopped the Lions on the 1-foot line, snapping a 19-game winning streak and ending Penn State’s dream of a national title. The Lions, who came into the game ranked No. 1, were held to a game total of 19 vards rushing by the Alabama defense. The Crimson Tide gained 208 yards on the ground after Penn State had held opponents to an average of 54.8 yards per game during the regular season. The 14-7 loss dropped Coach Paterno’s bowl record to 6-4-1, and was his third Sugar Bowl defeat. Penn State lost the 1972 Sucar Bowl to Oklahoma 14-0, and the 1975 game to Alabama 13-6. Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Brvant and Paterno both agreed that Alabama should be ranked No. 1 after the New Years Day game. “I think Alabama beat an awfully good football team and they probably should be No. 1,” commented Paterno. After Southern California’s 17-10 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan, USC coach John Robinson insisted, “We beat Alabama at Alabama and Alabama beat Penn State, so as far as I'm concerned we're the top team.” The United Press International board of coaches chose USC as national champion while Associated Press sportswriters and broadcasters voted Alabama No. 1. Commenting on the results of the polls, which he has consistently refused to vote in, Paterno said, “Obviously there is a disagreement in the polls. That’s why I've always been for a playoff system.” Harry MacCartney Women’s Basketball Action The Penn State Delco Women’s Basketball team won its fourth game of the season January 6 at Ogontz campus. The team, which is coached by Mrs. Monico, boosted its season record to 4-1. After their only loss of the season to Schuylkill at home, the Lady Lions walked away with a 46-38 victory at Ogontz—the team’s first win at that campus in Coach Monico’s career. High scorers for the game were Barb Conlin (15) and K. C. Blohm (14). The Lady Lions games are played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The next home game is Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. against Seranton. The home court is located at Northley Jr. High School, Concord Rd., Brookhaven. Come out and support the Lady Lions!
