By: Maria McKelvey Faculty and students alike, especially the incoming freshmen, probably have noted on their calendars the week of August. 30th to September 3rd with a large red circle, : ; As every veteran freshman knows the last week in August and the first week in September is orientation week, The administration and the student or- ganizations, especially the Undergraduate Eastern Branch Campuses Meet At Schuylkill The first Conference of Eastern Branch Campuses of The Pennsylvania State University was held on August 7, 1976, with Schuylkill Campus as the host. The conference, organized by Schuyl- kill Campus S.G.A, President RoseKouri, was intended to familiarize each of the: Eastern Branch Campuses student gov- ernments with each other, discuss some common problems, review each campus’ orientation plans for this fall, and open much needed lines of communication between the Eastern Branch Campuses. The following campuses were invited to the conference: Allentown, Berks, Capital, Delaware, Hazleton, Monto Alto, Ogontz, Wilkes-Barre, York, and host, Schuylkill, All were in attendance except Capital, Monto Alto, and York, Representing the Delaware County Campus at the confer- ence were U.S.A. President James J, Leemon, Vice President John J, Callahan, and student senator John P. Graham, A representative from each campus presented information of interest con- cerning his or her campus, including their plans for orientation, Following this, the group was broken up into two groups, While one group dis- cussed their orientation plans in closer detail, the other group discussed some of _ the problems various branch campuses have been having with the University Park Concert Committee, All-U day concerts, and the possibility of a concert sponsored by the Eastern Branch Campuses. - After the discussions were closed, the two groups were united to pool their thoughts and ideas, The chairperson of the group discussing concerts asked for and received volunteers to examine locations, prices, possible groups, etc,, to see if a concert sponsored by .the Eastern Branch Campuses is at all feas- ible, Reports on this information will be . given at the second Conference of Eastern Branch Campuses which will be held some time early in the fall term, The date ‘for the Conference has not yet! been" determined. Student Association (U.S.A.) have spent their vacation preparing for the onslaught “ of students to hit the campus come Sep- tember 7th, As is customary every year, orienta- tion week prepares the new Penn State students for campus life and college life in general, For most of the students high school is still fresh in their memories and orientation week is one way the uni- versity introduces itself. And, indeed, every day from Mon- day, August 30th through September 3rd is filled with carefully scheduled activi- ties composed by the administration, Monday, August 30th, includes the virtually painless tuberculin tests, the general reception on the rear patio feat- uring coffee and donuts, pre-registration testing in chemistry, math and English for students who have not already com- pleted the placement tests in these sub- jects, Placement tests will also be given in the Spanish, French and German languages. A word to the wise: taking the language placement tests or any place- ment tests is an easy way to receive required credits. If you place out of a course, you receive the credits for that course and advance to a higher placement level, Other activities on Monday include the General Assembly where John D, Vairo, Director, and Stephen J. Gimbala, Asso- ciate Director for Academic Affairs on this campus are the key speakers. Open Forum follows where the student organi- zations and clubs on this campus intro- duce themselves and answer questions about their respective organizations, Finally, at noon, there is the meatball sandwich sale sponsored by U.S.A, fol- lowed by the Associate candidate meetings for Electrical Engineering, Business, Let- ters, Arts and Sciences and Mass Com- munication, Tuesday continues with the college representative meetings with degree candidates and pre-registration for the students tested on Monday. Also, the traditional Fall Picnic will be held on the north end of the main building with food and games, a rock group and a demonstration by R.O,T,C.
