Page 4 - April, 1976 THE LION’S EYE DORM LIFE (Continued from Page 2) selective in what you bring. You’ll have some space, but no extra space, One convenience of the dorm is having a phone, but not receiving a monthly bill for your calls. The phone is located in the hall and one phone is allotted for every four rooms, Therefore, there may be a maximum of eight people using one phone, So be considerate, Also don’t make any long distance calls on these phones. If you do, the University will charge you " $5 plus the cost of the call, Pay phones are located throughout the dorm in con- venient places for your long-distance calls, A very helpful person on your floor is your Resident Assistant (RA). The RA’s usually help the newcomer get adjusted and will answer any questions about your dorm area, floor and house. If the RA doesn’t introduce himself-herself to you, go introduce yourself, The RA is there to help you, Make sure you know the policy for your house in the dorm, A house is your certain section of the floor. Some dorm houses have quiet hours which are very helpful if you like to study or if noise keeps you awake at night, Some dorms have these hours established. In other houses, the residents set the policy, Quiet hours usually take care of the biggest complaint about dorm life: the noise, If you have quiet hours established on your floor, then you have some author- ity to tell the noise people you're trying to study or sleep. If you plan to have friends of the opposite sex to your room, do not request non-visitation rights. These do give one extra privacy, but permit no one of the opposite sex on the dorm floor, Limited visitation rights are established with the same idea, but are in effectfrom midnight to 8 a.m, only. Your dorm will suffice as a place to live while you’re here at a school; how- ever, don’t sit in your room every night, The more you stay in your room, the more you’ll grow to hate it. Go to the movies or go out with some friends, Even the library can provide a different atmosphere. You’ll adjust to dorm life quickly. The dorm room may not be like your room at home and the food won’t be like mom’s, but now you’ll be able to join in the conversation when your older brothers, sisters or friends talk about their campus dorm life, OTIS (Continued from Page 3) you would become a tenant to the original tenant who in turn is your landlord. But it’s still the responsibility of the original tenant to take care of making sure the rent goes in to the original landlord. (Read it a couple of times, you’ll get it.) ASSIGNMENT Assignment is when the original ten- ant’s lease is out and is no longer responsible in any way. Then you have only the original landlord to deal with, Use common sense: 1) don’t get screwed in subletting 2) check out your adopted roommates, are they compatible? 3) tell the landlord you are subletting 4) get lease from your original tenant- in the same manner that the original tenant makes to the original land- lord, The security deposit is the same in agreement to original ten- ant, and so is damage list 5) pretend everything is as legal and binding as if you were the original tenant to the original landlord For lists of those subletting, check the bulletin board outside of the OTIS office!
