VICTORIA GLAUDE On January, 21* 2013, the United States witnessed the fifty-seventh Presidential Inau- guration, with the swearing in his second term. An estimated 1 million people braved the cold January weather to see the president take the oath of of- fice for his second time. Traffic at the café was down, and it was simply not generating enough revenue to sustain its costs. Many students and faculty were disappointed to hear that Café Java was closing down because the campus did not have the funding to keep it open. Due to the closing, the stu- dents that held positions at Ca- fé Java were forced to either find jobs elsewhere or go back to working full time at the Mill. In an interview for the Fourth Wall, Housing Direc- Elizabeth stated that students will have the opportunity to pick up hours at the Mill. The number of staff in the Mill is based on the number of overall students at Mont Alto, and the Housing and Food program bases their number of students on the number of meal plans purchased. Because there weren’t enough students at- tending the Mont Alto campus, some budget cuts had to be made. “Each person has a meal plan, not as many meal plans means not as many students on campus so there isn’t a need for so much staff,” stated Kearns.” tor All hope is not lost, howev- er, the Housing and Food pro- gram is trying to incorporate Café Java products into the different groups. president first Michelle Obama left the | comfort of ther motorcade walk the las few blocks o 4 the parade to the white house, The } : and % lady &8 to Obama’s inaugural address, he focused on difficult issues faced by Americans and issues that lawmakers need to address and find solutions for over the next four years. Drinks from the espresso machine will not be available at the Mill due to the machine being costly and difficult to move. When more students begin attending Mont Alto’s campus the Café will be reo- pened. Housing is waiting for things to change to reopen the café. Café Java was clearly a perk for many Mont Alto stu- dents, and visiting it even be- came routine to some. Michelle Chobor, a Café Java regular, had this to say, “I’m sad that I don’t have my morn- ing everyday Starbucks to wake me up before my class. I am not looking forward to not being able to have my milkshakes and frappuccinos when the weather gets warm- or.” Café Java was a way to get that extra caffeine pick-me up during the day, and just a re- laxing place to hang out with friends or do some studying for classes while sipping cof- fee. It seems very clear that Café Java will undoubtedly be missed and the students of Mont Alto will be discouraged to know that their little place of coffee and comfort will not be returning this semester.
