This organization is “an education and advocacy group of 37,300- plus Penn State alumni, parents, students, and friends. Network members freely volunteer their time to communicate the University’s goals, contributions, initiatives, and needs to community leaders, policymakers, legislators, and government officials. As advocates for the University’s future, Network volunteers work to increase public awareness of the benefits that Penn State brings to the commonwealth and to support its requests for state funding.” Travis Johnson If there are two constants in college football they are Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden spending their Saturday afternoons on the sidelines in State College and Tallahassee. Both have compiled legendary status with their wins and dedication to the programs they have helped foster over the years - Many years. Paterno will celebrate his 79 birthday later in December and Bowden is 76. They are ‘no spring chickens, but their success is incomparable. Bowden has won 359 games, Paterno 353, first and second most in NCAA history. The two will carry their highly respected reputations with them when they meet for the first time in sixteen years on January 3™ in the FedEx Orange Bowl in a match up that pits JoePa’s third ranked Penn State Nittany Lions against Bowden's twenty- second ranked Florida State Seminoles. While Bowden has more wins, it is Paterno-coached squads that have dominated Bowden over the years. Paterno is 6-1 against Bowden, with all six wins coming against him when he was the head coach at West Virginia. The Nittany Lions have never beaten the Bowden-led Seminoles. In fact, Bowden’s only victory against JoePa and the Lions came the last time they met when Florida State beat Penn State 24-17 in the Blockbuster Bowl. That was in 1990. Wow, how times can change in sixteen years. When the Big Ten champs meet the ACC champs in the New Year, it won't be a game to decide who the most dominant team or coach has been in the past decade. Paterno is coming off three rather forgettable seasons with Penn State in which the Lions lost seventeen of twenty-four games and Bowden has faced criticism in past seasons about his handling of off-field trouble with FSU athletes. Great coaches find a way to bounce back, and now each coach has a chance to finally declare nationally, “We're back!” The Orange Bowl will be their stage. ; It wouldn't be a BCS game without the controversy, however. Penn State comes into the game one second shy of an undefeated season and a share of the Big Ten championship. Paterno and the Lions are clearly deserving of their BCS berth. Florida State is a different story altogether. They are the lowest ranked team with the worst record (8-4) to appear in one of the four BCS bowls. Florida State found its way into the BCS by beating higher ranked Virginia Tech to win the ACC title. Whatever the records, the Orange Bowl is a brand new game and coaches like Paterno and Bowden will tell you records mean nothing when two teams meet head-to-head . Rather, it’s all about who’s ready to play. Penn State has dominated most of the season. Their only loss coming with one second to go at the hands of Michigan on a controversial call. Florida State started their season well with a victory over tough conference rival Miami and then dropped three consecutive games to NC State, Clemson, and Florida. The Orange Bowl should be a classic, not only for the quality of playmakers on the field but also for the Bowden- Paterno rematch. The two legendary coaches would prefer everyone to focus on the players on the field. As only JoePa could say it, “I think we just ought to forget about the Bobby Bowden-Joe Paterno relationship. I think we ought to be looking at two good football teams that are going to go down there and have a chance to knock each other’s brains out.” Phone: 814-234-0333 southgateapariments 1 I 3 @hotmail.com
