    Saxophonists Brooks and Smialek Perform On Campus
Kandace Brooks of the University of
Florida presented a duo saxophone recital with
Penn State music professor Smialek on Satur
day, January 22, at the Penn State Hazleton
Campus.
Accompanying the two saxophonists
was pianist Holly Hughes. The musicians per
formed at Hazleton and University Park Cam
puses as part of a three-day residency funded
by the University’s Fund for the Improvement
of Undergraduate Instruction and the Depart-

University of Florida music professor lectured
at the Hazleton Campus on January 20 and
offered a master class for saxophone students
at University Park the following day.
Brooks and Smialek put on the first

Brooks was featured as a soloist, she
played early works for soprano saxophone by
nineteenth-century composer Jean-Basptiste
Singlee. Smialek entertained the audience with
work for tenor saxophone and piano by New
Jersey composer Timothy Broege. The pro
gram also included original works for two
saxophones by Michael Cunningham, Glen
Smith, and a transcription of an eighteenth
century trio sonata by Jean-Baptiste Loeillet.
