" ’a 1 — SOTA Stages Misanthrope By: Corey Gesford The Society of the Arts (SOTA) held their production of "The Misanthrope" by Moliere during Parents’ Weekend, March 20-22, in the Highacres Commons. Under the direction of Theater professor, Steve Schrum, the play was transformed from its mid-17th century origin to the glitz and dazzle of 1978 New York. Freshman Jason Vichinsky played the lead role of Alceste, a writer and poetry critic, who has become disgusted with society’s lack of truth and over complimentary ways. His one satisfaction of life, lies in the arms of Celimene, played by sophomore Lisa Batchelor, whose beauty captures Alceste’s heart, but her consumption of the ways of society infuriates him. Celimene has many other suitors, including Alceste’s rival, Oronte, played by sophomore Whitman Stansbery, the comical duo of Clitandre (freshman Sam Nicola) and Acaste (freshman Evan Jay Levy). They represent the part of society Alceste is so much appalled by. The weekend is the only time I have to sleep in, and many times I tend to take advantage of this time. There have been many instances when I woke up as late as 11:00 a.m. Unfortunately, this is the only time friends of the opposite sex are allowed over on our side of Arsinoe (freshman Natalie Paris) and Eliante (Sophomore Alicia Floden). Eliante’s affections for Alceste hamper the advancement of her relationship with Alceste’s friend Philinte (sophomore Michael Urbanas). The battle between Alceste’s distaste for society, and the competition for Celimene’s affections, eventually lead Alceste to escape into a world where he can be his own man. Celimene in her failure to make a committment, and her inability to be truthful to herself and her suitors, lead her to lose everyone. Will Knapp was stage manager for the production, and Michelle Eldridge was assistant director. Rounding out the cast and crew were sophomores: Shawn Hartman, Erica Martin, Mark Roseberry, and Bridget Flaherty; freshmen: Gina Hammond, Christopher Knapp, Carolyn Krall, Matt Niziol, Amy Nickleson, Leeann Sherman, Miguel Fernandez, and Scott Hopeck. Bourke. the dorm past 12:15 a.m. So as I drag myself out of bed and stagger down the hall for a shower, I face an incredibly higher chance of bumping into some guy I do not even know. Who wants to leave a bad first impression, not to mention getting really embarrassed? So, after waking up, before I even open the door of my room, I have to make sure I do not look like something that just rose from the dead. This is the only real gripe I have about the weekend visitation policy. Maybe if the floor residents made aware of visitors, we Frank J. Or you’re peeking out the door before you exit a room in the North or West halls. Not because you have top secret information, or that you have found the cure for cancer and are trying to avoid medical billing agencies, it’s because you’re a member of the opposite sex of that designated area. The visitation policy is an outright joke and a slap in the face to the students ability to govern themselves. The policy is set-up so that students will be curbed from having sex after 12:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.. Now granted, our Guidelines for Living provided by the Office of Residence Life says the visitation policy of Penn State is to serve as a "guide for personal standards and is not designed to deprive individuals from developing their own set of higher standards nor to limit exercise of individual discipline....are designed to encourage interaction with respect to the rights of others, more specifically of the THE ©SCAR could be on the look-out and not so shocked when we see some strange man wandering the halls at 11:00 a.m. It is just not much fun being groped at roommate." In essence what they are saying is that students can’t make their own responsible decisions, and martial law has to be declared. Okay, students are eighteen years of age or older, and have came to a point in their lives where they have to start taking responsibilities. That means deciding if how long you want someone to stay in your room. To refute the argument that this rule is designed to protect the other roommate’s rights is a lame concept. If you are allowing your roommate to walk all over you in this matter, aren’t you setting a dangerous precedent for the rest of your life? If you don’t stand up for your rights now, when are you going to? Also, what if two people are merely studying? Residence Life will argue that the study lounges and common areas are for this purpose. First of all, isn’t it just as impolite to study in a group session in the study lounges? Secondly, have you ever tried to study in the lobby of South Hall? Give me a break. It’s time to get real. The visitation policy is in entire need of change or abolishment. 703 W.
