News From Senator John Heinz Washington—Senator John Heinz (R-Pa.) testified that “America must launch a two pronged attack on the increasing problem of acid rain.” Heinz called for immediate consideration of five possible courses of action and an in-depth study of the dynamics of acid rain. Acid rain is the result of sulfur and nitrogen oxides emitted by some industrial plants which combine with the moisture in the air. Hie mixture later returns to earth, sometimes hundreds or thousands of miles away from the original source, in the form of two of the most corrosive substances known to man—sulfuric and nitric acid. Heinz, citing an article in the Pennsylvania Forests magazine, said “A preliminary investigation has established that Pennsylvania is in the eye of the acid rain storm. Parts of Pennsylvania receive the most potent acid precipitation anywhere in the United States and possibly the world. “While the current situation with acid rain is certainly not acceptable, development of massive synfuel plants may accelerate the problem to disastrous proportions. “We must take prompt action to deal with the immediate problem, and simultaneously launch an in-depth study to Rosie’s Bunny Hutch 999 W. 15th St 459-0670 Finest hoagies in the area TOM’S KITCHEN LOCATED BETWEEN 1-80 & 1-81 on Rte. 93—Conyngham, Pa. Further all new power plants be required to install scrubbers. —The national energy program that is emerging from Congress ought to include provisions for preventing sulfur dioxide emissions that would lead to increased acidity in precipitation. Heinz also called for passage of the Acid Rain Precipitation Act (5.1754), of which he is a co sponsor. This act would: (1) Establish a federal Acid Precipitation Task Force chaired by the Administrator of EPA and composed of representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Health, Education and Welfare, and Interior, and from the National Science Foundation and the Tennessee Valley Authority. (2) Direct the Task Force to develop a plan to coordinate the efforts of federal and state agencies, localities, universities and other research and demonstration centers, and public and private corporations. (3) Authorize $152 million to be spent by the federal government over the next eleven years. Heinz testified before the National Commission on Air Quality. Album Reviews . f Styx Styxs ninth album “Cornerstone” follows in the Styx tradition of excellent music. Although the style remains much the same, the instrumental role has been developed further. The first song on side one “Lights" exposes the professionalism required in writing and playing such intricate music. Three relaxed, mellow songs, “Babe,” “Boat on River,” and “First Time” add a touch of variety to the album. The remaining songs contain spicy, appealing melodies that refuse to release the listeners’ attention from the songs. ft. '■y A 4 *4 k *G£> Fleetwood Mac has recently released a two record album, “Tusk.” This album defines itself very well with its own cover which is pale, bland, and lifeless. It is not that the songs themselves are unappealing, quite the contrary. The songs are interesting; however, they lack any sort of variety within themselves and are similar to each other. The instrumental accompaniments seldom change within the song. This rambling on creates a monotonous effect. This effect does not seem to be long lived due to the fact that each song is very short. Then the next song picks up where its predecessor left off creating an unreleaved cycle. Qne solution to this problem could possibly be for the listener to listen to only one or two songs at a time and then put the album away. Another solution may be for the listener to smoke a bag of good Columbia gold. Then after he or she is totally mellowed and burnt out, listen to the album. In their state they may be able to sit still long enough to listen to the entire album. The old chemical engineering lab located in the basement of the Memorial Building is currently being converted into an arts and crafts center, and according to Mr. Ev Binns, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, it should be ready for student use by this January. The project, headed by Mr. Binns, has been under consideration for almost two years now, but plans have really been accelerated within the past few months. All of the old chemistry equipment has been moved out and art supplies have been moved in, much of which was done by students in the Work- Study program during the past few weeks. A number of supplies, including an old loom, had been rescued from old art classes held years ago at the campus and stored in the Highacres Commons. New supplies, such as paints, brushes and canvas has already been stocked through funds provided by grants from the Office of Gifts and Endowments which has been requested by Dr. Michael Santulli and Dr. Alan Price. The purpose of the project is to provide a hobby center for students, so no formal classes will be given. However, consideration is being given to bring in local artists to instruct interested students in the finer points of the craft. The Campus Library is currently compiling a catalogue of its artwork and is running a student contest for a design for the cover of the booklet. The booklet will be a listing of all the paintings and sculptures that the library contains. It will also include a biographical sketch of the artist and some information on each piece of art. Since this catalogue is being compiled for the students’ benefit, it is hoped that the cover will be the work of a student. It is for this reason that the cover contest is being held. The cover design is entirely up to the individual, and the contest is open to all Highacres students. Die design should be 8% inches by 11 inches, and the deadline for entries is the end of the winter term. All entries will be judged by a committee, and the winner’s design will appear on the cover of the art catalogue. All students who are artistically-inclined are urged to enter and submit their entries to the library. msmi ITaihiuMxl Hobby Center To Open Library Sponsors Design Contest ERNIE’S Family Steakhouse Breakfast served 7:30 A.M.-U :00 A.M.
