—The Highacres Collegian, Friday, February 10, 1978 Faculty And Staff Sponsor Child For 78 Anderson Lee By LESA BAGLEY Collegian Staff Writer The faculty and staff members of the Hazleton Campus have contributed to sponsor a foreign child in cooperation with the “Save the Children Federation.” (SCF finds sponsors for underprivileged children in fifteen countries.) This was an alternative to the exchange of Christmas cards. The faculty was polled as to what country they would like the child from. The results were that most members wanted an American Indian child. TheS.C.F.has assigned Anderson Lee, a Navajo Indian, to the Hazleton campus of Penn State. Anderson Lee is fourteen years of age and is in the seventh grade. Anderson is attending a public school and lists basketball, football, and horseback ridingas his interests. Both of Anderson’s ' parents are unemployed and his father is unable to work because of health reasons. Anderson’s family consists of four brothers and two sisters. The family does have electricity, but water must be carried in from the Red Rock Chapter House near his home. The sponsorship payment of $192 is being used in the following manner: 78.1 percent of the $192 a year goes to the child and the community, $9O cash grants to child and community, $34.31 for Field Service to the child and community, $25.64 for child and community program support at the S.C.F. West Port office, $15.90 for management and general administration at the West Port office and $26.15 for public in formation and fund raising, annual reports etc. Anyone attending the Hazleton campus can write to Anderson Lee. The SCF has come up with helpful suggestions in corresponding with the child. When writing to the child, it is suggested using the sponsorship number 09 45 38775. Packages should be sent parcel post and insured with return receipt requested. Personal checks must be sent to Connecticut or Albuquerque and made payable to S.C.F. The S.C.F. then will send the amount of the check to the child. Clothing sizes are difficult to obtain so it is easier to send a cash gift or material. Visits with the child are permitted but arrangements should be made well in advance. The child can also visit the campus. Letters may be sent to: Anderson Lee, P.O. Box 907, Carson Trading Post, Gallup, N.M. 87301 or Anderson Lee, c-o Alfred Nez, P.O. Box 1530, Gallup, N.M. 87301. A periodical report from the S.C.F. will be sent with information about the child and his community. It is possible for the clubs or other organizations on campus to take interest in this program. More than one child can be sponsored by the campus. Student Union Board: Activities On The Move By WILLARD DONNER ‘ Club News Editor When certain activities are going on around the campus, they are usually sponsored by the Student Union Board. S.U.B.’s main interest is “things to do.” A Black Friday dance which was made white by the snow had to be cancelled but is rescheduled for some time in March. On January 19 an Open-Mike Coffee House was held in the Commons and despite the inclimate weather, there was a good turnout. On the week of February 1 to 8 a newly released movie, “Monty Python Meets Beyond the Fringe,” will be shown on campus. There will be afternoon and evening showings so that everyone has a chance to see the film. Also on Friday, February 4, S.U.B. will be sponsoring a “Movie Orgy” including movies like “Dirty Harry,” a great science fiction movie by the producer of Star Wars, plus, of course a Three Stooges Follies amongst many other greats. Times and prices for these activities will be posted. S.U.B. attempts to get activities together that everyone on campus can have fun doing. What can be more fun than collecting beer can tabs? Our campus is going to try to break the record for the longest beer tab chain. Just think not only will our campus name be in “The Guiness Book of World Records,” but we just might get known as the number one school in one of the greatest sports known to the United States; beer drinking. So next time you have a party, buy your beer in cans and do yourself and your campus a great favor. The Board is trying to unite all students to break the record for longest chain of pull tabs. In order to accomplish this goal, 35,000 tabs from beer, soda, and juice cans are needed. Students are asked to save the tabs from their cans and deposit them in collection boxes located in the Commons and in the dorm lobby. A donation of 40 tabs from each Highacres student would make this record-breaking event possible. And it’s not a big sacrifice to save the tabs from your next party to put Hazleburg in the Guiness Book of Records. Assembly of the chain is planned for Spring Week during April. Help get Hazleburg reorganized! PUT THE HAZLETON CAMPUS INTO THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS WITH THE LONGEST CHAIN OF PULL TABS DEPOSIT TABS IN THE BOXES IN COMMONS AND DORM LOBBY. What's Happening Residence Hall Council Plans Events The Residence Hall Council has a few things in store for the near future. Included among them are a pinball tournament, discos, a movie night and a swimming party. The Residence Hall Council has seen some very impressive discos held in the recreation room of the dorm and plans are being made to keep the turntables spinning as long as the crowds are there. The RHC is looking into acquiring an official name for the dorm. The fund raising committee has three money raising activities standing by. They may soon be put into effect because of the fact that two of R.H.C.’s three “Home Box Office” units were stolen. They are valued at $BO each and had to be paid for by the R.H.C. A reward was offered for their return but no feedback was received. The possibility of getting a light on Agony Hill was looked into. The idea was taken to SGA who in turn took it to Mr. Cerula. The idea was rejected due to lack of money and university red tape. The hyponosis lecture in the dorm lobby on Thursday, Januray 12 was a huge success. R.H.C. would like to thank the cultural committee, Everitt Binns and Scott Reedy.
