riighacres Collegian, May 17, 1977 Well Rounded Education Needed To The Editor: I must make An ob jection to Ms. Weber's letter of April 29. Ap parently Ms. Weber en visions and desires a university to be a trade school. It is un fortunate that Ms. Weber does not appreciate the advantages of a liberal education whose intent is to develop general intellectual capacities, NOT productive potent ials. She sees college as merely career train ing, and thereby argues that all subjects must fill a "need". As life becomes more harried and pre surred, we try in col lege to get done, get out, and get around, but it is also impor tant to have some peo ple around who are con cerned with the quality of life and spirit in society as a whole, ra ther than in some spec ialized corner of it. Ms. Weber states that she saw the need to have a well-rounded education in high sch ool. In contradiction, she then states that taking calculus in high school was valuable be cause it helped her make a career choice. She fails to see that even if you never have any use for the mater ial, a liberal educa tion makes life more interesting than it otherwise might be. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It is less likely that you will be bored with life or that your fri ends will find you a bore. In short, it al lows you to see, under stand, and think thoughts which the un dereducated seldom do. It si just not an alertness to things a round you that makes life richer; one must find one's self and only a liberal educa tion will give you a chance of finding a sense of where you are, where you have been, and where you are go ing. These are some of the merits of a liberal education, but many people in the United States have attitudes towards education simi lar to those of Ms. Continued on 5 The HIUHACRES COLLEGIAN was the recipient of two p lication awards i.n The Press Association of Commonwealt! Campuses Annual Newspaper Awards Contest. The COLLEGIA; placed second in the categories of both best news cover age and best editorial page. Douglas Heller and John Sengle, staff writers for COLLEGIAN, won second places in the individual awards c. egory. Heller received his award in the best feature a icle category for his article "COLLEGIAN Personality; Leonard Shnevel", which appeared in the February 17 edi tion of the COLLEGIAN. Second place was won by Sengle the best news article category for his article, "Librar Losses High, Says Ferry." That article was published i the March 30 issue. The COLLEGIAN competed against the 18 other Common wealth Campus newspapers that comprize The Press Associa tion of Commonwealth Campuses. In the general category best newspaper, the COLLEGIAN placed only 30 points out a possible 1250 points behind the second place winner. Litter To The Editor: serious pro- blem exists on our Cam pus . Its eonsquenr.e.s’ may not seem dire or particularly harmful; but they are real. The problen is litter. the next time you walk through the class room building of dowm to the dorm, or out to the tennis courts, take a good look around at all the cups, beer cans, and cigarette butts ly ing around. There are many parts of our cam pus that are becoming quite unsightly. Litter causes pro blems other than eye- sores. Litter is taken as a reflection of our attitudes toward our campus and our envi- ronment. S o please put litter in its place -Can it!! Dan Smith
