Highacres Collegian, January 31, 1977- Page Three When the ballot were be ing counted after the last Stu dent Government Association election, the Election Commit tee ran across a ballot that had this written on its "Even though you don’t do a damn thing I’ll vote anyway." Well, I thank that person for at least voting because by voting this person proved him self wrong! For an organiza tion that' does not "a damn thing" the S.G.A. ran a pretty good election. But that is not all ! One would have to be the most apathetic person on campus or a complete moron not to see what S.G.A. does. Dr. David can attest to this. I have been to see him about this campus and the wel fare of this campus so many times that I am afraid he is going to give me a permanent office beside his! The S.G.A. has taken a campus on the verge of com plete social breakdowm and turned it into a campus cap able of putting on one of the best LAS VEGAS HITEs ever and bringing in one of the fore most authorities on the assas sination of John F. Kennedy. How has S.G.A. done this? We formed a coun-r cil that meets every Thurd day at 12:30 in the S.G.A. conference room. This coun cil is called thb Highacres Club Advisory Council and is made up of the presidents of the clubs on this campus. It was through these meetings that the clubs started to work together and Apathy on this campus, as far as the clubs are concerned, became almost non-existent! The S.G.A. has registerd six new organizations, a record high for one term! That is six more groups the students can From the desk of the SGA President Ron Drum I’LL VOTE ANYWAY become involved in. The S.G.A., mainly through the hard work of Elliot Gross man, has started a column in The Hazleton Standard Sneaker. Greater Hazleton's newspaper, entitled "Highacres Happenings.' This column is open to any club op,, campus that wishes to pub licize their activities. But, then why am I writ ing this? It will obviously not be read by those it was focused at, because they prob ably will be so apathetic that they will not even be reading this Collegian. Well, how is that for an organization that does not "do a damn thing?" HAe Me When I first became Pres ident of the Student Govern ment Association, I said I would try to look into any complaint that the students may have pertaining to the campus and do anything I could to solve a problem, if one exist ed. Anumber of people have com plained to me about the price increase and the use of styrofoam cups instead of porcelain cups at the Commons snack bar. I went straight to the people in volved; the ladies who work at the snack bar, and Mr. Krone, the Manager of Food and Housing. The information I received, I feel should be known by the student body here at Highacres. Mr. Krone tried, at the beginning of this year to lower the snack bar costs. He decided to use materials (cups, etc) on stock and reduce the work force using"'new tecniques for quicker Continued on Page 5 HUNTERS DO IT To The Editor: I would like to go on record as a supporter of the bill recently introduced into the State House of Eepresen tatives that would ban the use of any birth control devices on Pennsylvania State College and University Campuses,l am totally against the use of birth control de- vices since they take the daringness and risk out of sexual intercourse. If an unwanted pregnancy occurs, abortion should be used. Abortion is a much more practical and efficient method of eliminating unwanted child ren since it only has to be used if a pregnancy does occur. Birth control devices have to be used regardless of pregnancy thereby wasting precious materials that could have been used to produce another pro duct j or good for mankind. I am sick of various anti abortion groups claiming that abortion is a detestable method of eliminating unwanted child ren or even claiming that it is "murder." Abortion is simply the termination of anothe: beings life. These anti abortion groups can call abortion"murder"if they want here they are dealing with just a technicality. What could possibly be wrong with ending another being's life? Hunters do it all the time. If they can do it why can't everybody else? In closing, I urge THE HIGHACRES COLLEGIAN to support the bill that would not only ban birth controls devices at State Colleges and Universities but also increase the number of abortions throughout the state thereby putting murder where it belongs: in the state's hospitals and clinics. Most earnestly yours, John Emanon sth term - Theology
