Page 2 - The Highacres Collegian, April 4, 1975* So yon know the value of student government? Like any other organization, effort must he applied in student govern ment before any rewards can be gained. This fact confuses many students. They take no interest in student govern ment, and so, see no returns. As a results they can see no value in the Student Union Board or in the Student Gov ernment Association. A cycle of apathy is initaited. The size of the Highacres campus make it an excellent place to make yourself heard. Surely, not everyone can have a direct voice in policy making. The responsibility of every student is to take an active interest in the election of the students to represent them. Discuss with them your goals, your opinions and the welfare of the Highacres student body. A blind vote or a popularity vote does not help good govern ment. Vote wisely. After elections, the work begins. The Student Union Board and Student Government Association members need your help to represent you effec tively. They need your ideas and opinions. Also, at times, they need you to remind them of their duty. They were elect ed to you. Do you remember the pe tition that was circulated, calling for the removal of the air-hockey machine from the Commons cafeteria to the game ■room? Nearly 200 students ■signed this petition. The num- Iber of students that voted in I the last student government [election was not much greater. | The demand made inthe petition | was voted upon by the S.G.A. I and defeated 1 soundly. The [noise continues. I urge that YOU do some reminding. Ask your represen tative their views on this and matters. These people are responsible to you. To the board of the S.G.A. I wish to make known my views on the air hockey machine. I b elieve that you may be correct in your consideration of the vandalism factor concerned with relocating the machine. Pos sibly you should consider re locating all the equipment in the game room to the cafeteria This would solve tfte vandalism and the noise problem. No one would be bothered by the clatter while eating or talking—there would be no room for anyone to ,so either. Seriously, though, I think that vandalism to all ! the equipment would be reduced by putting the air hockey machine downstairs. The more people using the downstairs recreation room, the less vandalism will occur. Vandals like solitude. Also, I don't think the air hockey fans will 1 stop using the machine simply because they will have to walk down a flight of stair to play, Jerry Pratt APATHY? Apathy, apathy, apathy. That's all we hear nowadays. Many people say that the word was made to describe the cam pus. But apathy isn't our problem. Ignoranee is. The people responsible for publicity on this cam pus have been knocking them selves out trying to let eveyone know what events are taking place and when they are happening. Still, after signs and a announcement, snow writ ings, sidewalk graffiti and some publicity stunts, many people on campus never know that and event is taking place. The other day I talked to a student who didn't know that any dances were held on campus. How many of you know that the Commons is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday? What is it about the game room? Everybody is crying about the air hockey machine. Yet they are the ones respon sible for its being upstairs. Use the pinball machines, play shuffleboaxd (fares), and begin ning this term, ping pong pad- j dies will be available for all students to use. Card tables have been placed down there for everybody to use. If every* body would use these facili ties, it would make it safe to move the machine downstairs, and maybe, with enough stu dent interest, we can get more machines downstairs in the game room. I know you all care about this campus, but now is the time to PROVE it. Go to the dances and movies, join clubs, vote during electimns, most of all, cheek the bulletin boards daily so that we may use loyalty to describe our campus, rather than apathy. Joseph C. Melnick Chairman of the Publica tions and Promotions Committee, Co-chairman of the Game loom.
