Page 8 - The Highacres Collegian, Feb. 25, 1975 LETTER Continued From Page 7 and made available to the Commonwealth campuses who want them. Our first SGA election was also held during Fall Term. It was run entirely by Patti Blust and Debbie Burgess who are arranging another SGA election to be held the first week of Spring Term. During those first two terms, three new clubs have beeen organized and two clubs revised their constitutions «s and reorganized with the help of Susan Petrilla and the SGA registering committee. Those clubs reorganizing were the Broadcast Club and Circle K, and new clubs are: The Chess Club, The Parachute Club and The Drama Club. Winter Term seemed to be filled with surveys and peti tions, First of all, I pro- posed to the Faculty General Assembly, that the 35 minute lunch period be increased to 1 hour. So, SGA surveyed 175 members of the student body t to find out if that's the way students wanted it and found about of those surveyed were opposed to the extension. Donna Postupack, Francie Grencavich, Pat Devine, and ■ Maureen Marcus spent a lot of time on this project. Two facility members came to our meeting one week and asked us to find out how a course in- all the aspects of death would go over with the students. Patti Blust and Debbie Burgess put that together and the re sults are now being tabulated. SGA also circulated a pe tition to extend the library hours - and the library is now open Saturday afternoons. About this time, I found out that the Sorority would not be able to sponsor a semi-formal Valentine's dance. Luann Surak got out a survey to see if the students wanted a semi formal and the results were good. Also, this event was well attended last year, so Barb Williams and myself got to work planning a semi- formal sponsored by SGA. The dance was held last Saturday, with over $0 people attending. We are currently sponsoring an Air Hockey Tournament - with Dean McCallus giving up time on his lunch hour to referee • on the Air Hockey machine pur chased by SGA. We also suc ceeded in getting' students placed on Dr. Miller's sched uling committee to help with the Spring Term schedule. Thos students are: Donna Postupack, Maureen Marcus and Pat Devine. And sophomores, how many of ‘you remember getting a tic ket for parking along the grass on the sophomore lot. Did you notice that doesn't happen any more? Did you ever wonder why? Well, you can thank SGA, Well, so much for the highlights of our first two terms. How let me tell you some of the things that will be happening, that are al ready being worked on. For example, for the past 2 months Bill Finerfrock and Bill Michael have been devoting much of their time to planning the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon. Kim DePue, whorls also the OTIS (Organization of Town Independent Students) re presentative on campus, is currently trying to start a branch of OTIS on this cam pus, (Read more about OTIS in the article in this edi tion of the Collegian) Chris Slivka, SGA Treasurer, is undertaking a project to in ventory all equipment owned by the various clubs and or ganizations. Mark Butler, Michelle McClure and Donna Postupack are currently plan ning activities for Earth Week which is being co-spon sored by SGA, the Faculty- Student Relations Committee, Biology Club, SUB and any other interested organiza tion • A committee of Susan Petrilla, Chris Slivka, Francis Grancavich, Mr. Binns, and myself already have most of the plans for the Awards Banquet completed. Also, I have begun working on what I consider to be my "big project" for the year. That is a petition drive to establish a Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) owned and controlled by Penn State stu*v dents. I really think that PIRG is a good idea, and I hope you will sign a PIRG petition. Read more about PIRG in the next issue of the COLLEGIAN. Congratulations! You're almost done reading this grammatical fiasco. I just hope the English Department doesn't revoke my English grades for this. I think I'v< said enough (and I'm sure you think so, too.) Besides, I think I'm getting writer's cramp. I sure you're all sit ting out there thinking, "Who does he think he is to come out and writer something like this?" Well, I'll tell you. I'm someone who's tired of working for people who don't appreciate it and I'm tired of continually trying to do these things without any in terest shown by the student body. I'm not looking for praise or sympathy or any thing like that through this letter. I'm just looking for a little support and interest shoxm in the things we do. You see, what it all comes down to is apathy. I've been avoiding that word becausi I am sick and tired of hearing it. Since I was a sophomore in high school, all I've heard as an excuse for anything was apathy, I never could buy that, but I'm beginning to change my mind, because I can't think of any other word to describe the situation. And because of your apathy, this "disease" is spreading even to the small percentage of people on this campus who do do something. Why? Be cause of lack of motivation. Nobody cares what we do, so why should we do it? This is the attitude that some people are beginning to take—and I don't want to see it happen. So, thanks for reading this. I really hope it does some good. We can accomplish a lot, but not without the support of everyone. SGA President, Rick Nork CLASSIFIED ADS GET RESULTS, PLACE YOTJR ADS IN THE COLLEGIAN
