Page Six - Highacres Collegian, October 18. 1974 LIBRARY NEWS NEWSPAPER AWARDS Three members of the 19- 73-74 Collegian staff have been awarded Certificates of Merit from the 1974 College Press Competition of St. Bon aventure University. These awards were pre sented to William Michael for his sports coverage, and Lin da Gallagher and Mary Angie DeLazio . for their columns. Ms. DeLazio was the editor of the Spots column, and Ms. Gallagher was Managing Editor of the Collegian and author of of the popular column entitled "Edna, the Poor Student's Philosopher." Every year the St. Bona venture University holds its annual College Press Day and presents awards to the members of college newspaper staffs from all over the nation. An Award of Excellence, a Spec ial Citation, and a Certific ate of Achievement are the three highest honors. Certifi cates of Merit are also award ed to those students whom the judges feel deserve honorable mention for noteworthy work in their field of specializa tion. Awards were presented in the categories of Art, Editor ial Writing, Feature Writing, News Writing, Photography, Sports Writing and Column Writ ing. Awards are also pre sented to the outstanding col lege newspaper and to outstand ing newspapers in three clas sifications. During Fall Orientation, the library was very busy with its own orientation by making available many of its resourc es and materials for the new Freshmen. Mrs. Ferry and the Library Staff wish to thank all the students who helped make Library Orientation a success. The tapes that were shown at orientation are being set up in the seminar room for the benefit of those who could not hear them, or for those who missed the presentation. The library now has "C.- A.R.", the Career and Academ ic Resource Corner on the main floor of the library. Mr. James White is responsible for initiation this helpful ser vice. You will find college catalogues, vocational Guid ance Information, the tapes on the colleges within the University, and more. Come, look and listen! Library hours have been posted from Sunday through Thursday evenings 6:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. and from Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Come in and adopt your own private little study carrel and study! Please check out books, periodicals, records, pamph lets, and cassette players at the circulation desk. Your cooperation is needed in re turning materials on time so that everyone will have an op portunity to use the library materials. The Library also publishes lists of books and other ma terials twice a month. These publications can be found on the new book displays. ALUMNI CORNER by Donna Marie Bayer Mr. James Harner of Har ner's Jewelers at 37 East Broad Street in Hazleton was interviewed for this issue's Alumni Corner. Mr. Harrier was born in Berwick and attended high school there. After graduating from high school Mr. Harper en rolled in Pre-Med and dropped that major because he received a "C" in organic chemistry. He then switched to a food science major. Food science involves the effects of pro cessing on foods and the ac tual practice of food process ing._ While in this course, Mr. Mrner worked as a lab technician at Penn State. This, he confided, was a great asset to his studies, for, in his work, he was surrounded with men who were able to help him with his courses, and was at times actually involved in research on the material he was studying at the time. While he was at University Park, Mr. Harper also did re search on cows and goats and biosynthesis. After graduating from Penn State, Mt. Earner went to work for a research lab of the Carnation Corporation in Los Angeles. From there,, he was emplyed by a diiision of Abbott, where he was in volved in the development of a mon-fat coffee creamer, which was an offshoot of the coffee . I BOB'S 44***** Sporting Goods 133 N.
