Reefer Madness? (ZNS) An official U.S. government scare film about the evils of marijuana is now being used by marijuana boosters to raise money for the legalization of grass. The movie being shown throughout the state of California is "Reefer Madness." "Reefer Madness" was widely circulated by the Bureau of Narcotics in the last 1930's to demonstrate that smoking pot led to personal destruction and even death. In one sequence, ZNS) Get ready for a weekly situation comedy on national TV starring Cheech and Chong. The Gibson and Stromberg Public Relations Agency reports that two major television networks are attempting to sign the comics for the weekly show. The plot would revolve around Chee - ch and Chong playing two - men with a truck for hire. three people in the film smoke a joint; one man proceeds to commit rape; a second commits murder; and a third commits suicide. In any case, supporters of an, initiative on the California ballot which would remove the criminal penalties against marijuana use, are using the film to raise maoney. They are showing "Reefer Madness" to amused audiences—and believe they can raise $5OOO. late money )- ,4111P (ZNS) Singer Judy Collins as just launched her first tional concert tour in more an two years. She will be appearing in the id-west, South and East during le next two months—and will conclude her tour with concets at Carnegie Hall in New York just before Christmas. (ZNS) DOCTOR HOOK will release its second album early next month. It's called "Sloppy Seconds." DOCTOR HOOK AND COMPANY just finished shooting a one-hour special for Danish TV in which the band does a six-minute scene in the nude. That TV Special will also be shown in the U.S. next year, with the nude scene deleted. WHCB ATTENDS WORKSHOP During the weekend of October 28, the Hazleton Campus Broadcasting Company was represented in a student radio forum at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey sponsored by station WCPR. WHCB's delegates to the conference were faculty advisor George Caliva, Howard Havens, and Chris Amacher. The workshops included discussions on broadcasting methods, presentation of the news over radio, and obtaining the cooperation of record and telephone companies. In general, the conference offered opportunities to consider and attempt to solve common problems of student broadcasting. The Wolfman is playing the lead role in a movie called "American Graffitti"—produced by Frances Ford Coppola, who did "The Godfather." Wolfman Jack plays the part of a D.J. in his screen debut in a film about "cruising in the early 1960'5." The Wolfman recently cut his first record, called "I Ain't Never SeenA White Man". So, if the negotiations with Grunt are successful, this will be Balin's first record in mor than a year. movies The Damned & Hotel There we were all sitting in C-1 waiting to be entertained by another movie. But we were wrong again! THE DAMNED, whose stars will remain anonymous for their own sake, must be one of the poorest movies ever viewed by human eyes. Both the script and the production were terrible. The pre-World War Two political aspect could have been interesting but was improperly presented. The sex scenes were not fit for a grade-B movie, and when politics and sex were thrown together at the same time, it got disgusting. The audience was lost immediately after the credits due to poor technical lighting, irrelevant characters and 4uick scene shifts. By the end of the third reel, everyone was trading notes (ZNS) ALICE COOPER, a group not noted for its subtlety, will tour Europe next month in a red, white and blue airplane. (ZNS) Several major American record companies are reported to be fighting a hot and heavy battle for the right to record a new group. According to "Creem" magazine, the group is called "Bobby Fisher And The Checkmates." And they come from Brooklyn by way of (yes) Iceland. Their first single? "Boris, the Amazing Russian Bear." by Linda gallagher with his neighbor in an attempt to salvage the story—line. Due to technical difficulties, the last reel was never shown. I really don't care how it ended, but could someone please tell me how it began? Hotel Believe it or not, a good movie was finally shown in C-1. HOTEL, starring Rod Taylor, Catherine Spaak, Melvin Douglas and Kevin McCarthy made a hit with the audience. Based on a novel by Arthur Hailey, the story contained everything: love, adventure, humor and sentiment. It was a great movie and with luck they will get even better.
