HIGHACRES COLLEGIAN, JANUARY 31, 1972 --- PAGE FOUR Hazleton by BILL SCHALLER Hazleton was the victim of a 101-79 loss at the hands of Ogontz on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the winner's gym. Ogontz was simply too big for Hazleton as they started four men six foot three or better, including a six foot eight center. And as the case usually is, a good big team will almost always beat a good little team. Hazleton fell behind 14-1, but fought back to tie it at 18 apiece. Ogontz then spurted to a 42-20 lead but once again Hazleton came roaring back and it was still a game at the half, with the score 52-40 in favor of Ogontz. From that point, however, the height advantage began to tell as Ogontz went up 75-50, and Hazleton never threatened again. Larry Kovatch, Bill Schaller, Jim Chapman, Wayne Stewart and Craig Knouse evenly divided most the Hazleton points. Every Hazleton player saw action as Coach Bobby cleared the bench. It was a disappointing loss because Hazleton played poorly and still made a game of it for a half. Had they been at the top of their game it would have been much more interesting. buy a yearbook 50 y o N R " , P OFF JACKETS MENS MENS 20 iyo S weaters SUBUR- and BANS OFF VESTS 20 ENS pie Long 1; 3 11 E Sl eeveSS OFF SHIRTS CHENETZ'S For Men and Boys 25 WEST BROAD ST. $185.00 Per Person A Little Vacation by Capitol International Airways For Faculty, Staff and Students of Pennsylvania State University and their families From Philadelphia, Pa., March 28-April 1, 1972 Singer Travel Agency Suite 703, Northeastern Bldg. Despite their two losses, they are still in good shape as far as winning the division. Following is a brief rundown of Hazleton's first four games: Hazleton opened its season Jan. 8, with an impressive, hard fought 96-92 victory over a much taller Berks team. Joe Zoeller and Jim Chapman caught fire late in the game, and rallied Hazleton from 10 pts. behind with four minutes left to pull out the four point victory. Zoeller led Hazleton with 28 points and 19 rebounds and Chapman tossed in 24 points. Bill Schaller, with 19, and Craig Knouse, with 17, helped out with some valuable scoring. Berks started three boys from Pittsburgh Schenley High School, the 1971 Class A state champion. In their next outing, Hazleton played host to Schuylkill Campus on Jan. 12, and simply was not "up" after their big opening win over Berks. Coach George Bobby's five found themselves 17 points behind with only two 0, 5 .-. _dt J minutes to play. A remarkable comeback led by Bill Schaller, Craig Knouse and Jim Chapman, closed the gap by out scoring the visitors 21-5 in those final two minutes, but it still left the home team one point short when the buzzer rang. The final score was Schuylkill 101, Hazleton 100. Schaller and Chapman, first cousins, by the way, led Hazleton with 27 apiece and Knouse had 13. In this division along with Hazleton are Wilkes-Barre, Allentown, Schuylkill and Scranton. Scranton and Hazleton tied for division honors last year, but Scranton won a playoff. This year Hazleton is 3 and 2 to date, but they're in a good position to capture their division. There are three other divisions in the league, and at the end of the season, each of the four division representatives meet in a playoff to determine the league champion. This year Coach Bobby feels he has the talent and experience to take the division, and possibly win it all. , ////01 Get Your Free... Hazleton then traveled to Allentown on Jan. 14 in an effort to make up for that one point loss suffered at the hands of Schuylkill two days earlier. And, despite the absence of injured starter Bill Schaller, who was out with a pulled leg muscle, Hazleton won it going away, 97-76. Steady Jim Chapman continued to burn up the nets as he scored 26 points. Larry Kovatch with 15, Craig Knouse with 11 and Wayne Steward with 10, were all key factors in the win. Steward and Ron Cipriana filled in more than adequately for the injured Schaller. Hazleton finally seemed to put it all together in this win at Allentown. Hazleton led all the way, but Scranton closed the gap to 96-94 with three minutes to play. However, some clutch scoring by Jim Chapman and Bill Schaller preserved the win. Once again it was Chapman doing the bulk of the scoring as he netted 34 points on a variety of shots. Chapman was a sensational 15 for 21 from the field. Schaller wound up with thirty points mostly on drives and jump shots from the wing. Twenty of Schaller's points came in the second half. Cousins Schaller and Chapman have combined to average better than 55 points a game in the first four games. Joe Zoeller played another sparkling game as he tossed in twenty points and delivered at least a dozen eye-catching assists. The remainder of the scoring was done by Larry Kovatch with 14, Wayne Steward with 11 and Craig Knouse with 8. Kovatch played an excellent defensive game, and along with Schaller, Zoeller and Steward helped Hazleton control the boards against a taller Scranton team. Steward also played an important role, coming off thP bench to score 11 points when Knouse ran into early foul trouble. Hazleton's record at this point was three wins and one loss.
