Popular Upperclassman
Frank A. Cermak, upperclassman,
comes from California where he
attended U.C.L.A. Recently trans
ferred from the regular Navy, he
is continuing his academic efforts
at Highacres in the chemical-en
gineering field. He lives near Bar
nesville with his wife Mary and his
daughter Heidi. As a Navy Lieu
tenant, Cermak received intensive
expert instruction in the Russian
langue, provided by the U.S. Navy,
later served as a translator-inter
pretor for a period of four years.
Cermak was persuaded by mem
bers of the faculty to lead an in
formal course, via seminar, in the
Russian language for them. The
versatile Cermak was one of our
three representatives at the recent
Tenth Annual Interpretative Dra
matic Reading Festival at the Uni

THE HIGHACRES BELLES
LETTRES SOCIETY has been
flourishing under the direction of
Professor Andrew Kafka, faculty
adviser. This literary group, or
ganized only this year, is already
well on the way toward achieving
these objectives: (1) The encour
agement of creative writing;
(2) criticism of all students work
submitted; (3) analysis of literary
writings for the purpose of exam
ining writing techniques and craft;
(4) the extension of invitations to
people who are authorities in the
world of literature; (5) the taking
of trips to hear lectures by literary
figures; (6) the submission of stu
dent writings for ultimate publica
tion. Among the Belles-Lettres
Society's active members are Rita
Sappe (President), Frances Werp
sham (Secretary), Frank C2rmak,
Patquale Collura, Olga Markus,
Marlene Ferrari, Stanley Cierlits
key, John Bodnar and Thomas
Maxwell. At the moment a number
of members of the Society are
engaged in different literary en
deavors which include short stories,
a novel, a poem, and an essay.
The Belles-Lettres Society's first
project was the sponsorship with
the English Department of stu
dents for participation in the an
nual Intercollegiate Interpretative
Reading Festival at the Main
Campus. The sponsoring of stu
dents each year will be the re
sponsibility of the Belles-Lettres
Society with the aid of the English
Department. This year, Frank
Cermak, Dorothy Melley, and
Theodore Minor participated.

HIGHACRES CAMPUS, HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA
Mr. William Schneider, our Assist
ant Administrator at Highacres is
well-known by all of our students.
However, did you know that he is
a District Representative who helps
organize academic courses around
Greater Hazleton that covers the
Danville-Bloomsburg-Berwick and
Weatherly Area ? We approached
him to ask about this part of his
responsibilities. He told us that
this year a number of formal and
informal extension activities gave
training and pleasure to approxi
mately 413 adults in 12 programs
which emillated from the High
