Recently trans ferred from the regular Navy, he is continuing his academic efforts at Highacres in the chemical-en gineering field. He lives near Bar nesville with his wife Mary and his daughter Heidi. As a Navy Lieu tenant, Cermak received intensive expert instruction in the Russian langue, provided by the U.S. Navy, later served as a translator-inter pretor for a period of four years. Cermak was persuaded by mem bers of the faculty to lead an in formal course, via seminar, in the Russian language for them. The versatile Cermak was one of our three representatives at the recent Tenth Annual Interpretative Dra matic Reading Festival at the Uni versity Park Campus. Meet Highacres' Future Authors of America By Rita Sappe THE HIGHACRES BELLES LETTRES SOCIETY has been flourishing under the direction of Professor Andrew Kafka, faculty adviser. This literary group, or ganized only this year, is already well on the way toward achieving these objectives: (1) The encour agement of creative writing; (2) criticism of all students work submitted; (3) analysis of literary writings for the purpose of exam ining writing techniques and craft; (4) the extension of invitations to people who are authorities in the world of literature; (5) the taking of trips to hear lectures by literary figures; (6) the submission of stu dent writings for ultimate publica tion. Among the Belles-Lettres Society's active members are Rita Sappe (President), Frances Werp sham (Secretary), Frank C2rmak, Patquale Collura, Olga Markus, Marlene Ferrari, Stanley Cierlits key, John Bodnar and Thomas Maxwell. At the moment a number of members of the Society are engaged in different literary en deavors which include short stories, a novel, a poem, and an essay. The Belles-Lettres Society's first project was the sponsorship with the English Department of stu dents for participation in the an nual Intercollegiate Interpretative Reading Festival at the Main Campus. The sponsoring of stu dents each year will be the re sponsibility of the Belles-Lettres Society with the aid of the English Department. However, did you know that he is a District Representative who helps organize academic courses around Greater Hazleton that covers the Danville-Bloomsburg-Berwick and Weatherly Area ? We approached him to ask about this part of his responsibilities. He told us that this year a number of formal and informal extension activities gave training and pleasure to approxi mately 413 adults in 12 programs which emillated from the High acres Campus.
