PAGE FOUR Making The Most Of Our Highacres Student "Rec" Hall In December, 1953, arrangements were made for the Highacres recreational activities and the Health Department activities to be combined in one building. These were moved into the small quarters known as the Student Recreation Hall, or more affectionately as “K Cottage.” This was the first step in the long-range planning and prep aration for the expansion of campus and recreational and social activities to be housed and coordinated in one Student Union Building. Merle Campbell, who was administrator of the Highacres Campus then, and is now in charge of the University Park Division of all the Centers administration, foresaw this need for expansion. Nevertheless, small as it is, the “Rec” Hall is used by students in a variety of ways. It is convenient for students to relax, visit with each other, watch the T.V. on the second floor or play a game of checkers, cards, chess, or scrabble, the chess and scrabble tournaments becoming more and more popular every year. In the morning, when it is quiet, they can study. Yet, the limited space does not allow too many to gather in one place for long. 'fine liuuse Rules Committee meets each month. It formulates the policies and establishes workable budgets to provide for some of the needs, for example, magazines and games. In the same building, Mrs. Leah Kostenbauder, the campus nurse, takes care of the Health Department activities. She keeps an eye on the “Rec” Hall also. She inspires the proper decorum, reasonable “letting off steam,” and respect for tidiness. For example, games and equipment are properly checked out and returned, so that the place can be inviting to students and to the faculty. One can frequently find her in the middle of a game with students, hear their laughter, and see admiration in their happy faces as they watch for her reactions to a joke or a surprise turn in a game. Not only is she available for a hand in a game, she is also approached to sew on a button in time for a R.O.T.C. inspection, o,r stitch up a torn banner or flag when necessary. She is often in the midst of a discussion when her opinion is sought. There are frequent, sentimental farewells when students “graduate” from the Highacres Campus. When former students visit the campus, they look for her. At the moment, she is fussing and planning for the annual Christmas cookie party fo,r the “Rec” Hall. Thus, all this activity in so small a space is made tolerable by careful management. Cheers For Our Highacres Bowling Olympics With six weeks of the eighteen-week Bowling League schedule completed, the results of some fine bowling reveal that the Fudge Factors, captained by Andy Yuresko, is in first place by one-half point, holding a very slim lead over the Maple Busters, captained by Ed Smith. They have met the many problems which have arisen with the setting up of a very difficult program for sixty-one Keglers. The League has no matches scheduled for December 23 o,r 30, but will resume play on January 6. Reported by L. J. SOROKATCH Reported by B. TUCIII and N. DEAKOS HIGHACRES COLLEGIAN Greetings From Highacres Theta Sigma Pi Sorority The Theta Sigma Pi Sorority was founded at the Highacres Campus in the aiitumn of 1949. It has grown through the years, until now it is one of the most stimulating activities which our campus offers to its co-eds. The purpose of the Sorority is to encourage better understanding and practice of the social amenities among our young women, and to offer mutual suggestions for self-improvement in wholesome and gracious living. The Sorority has numerous meetings and social gatherings of various sorts which help bring pleasure and social maturity to our students. The girls sponsor the popular May Day Celebration at High acres, during which the May Day Queen is chosen. This is one of the most colorful and festive activities at Highacres.
