Joe Frazier has finally spoken
out on his upcoming fight with
MuhammedAli. Joe seems more
than confident that Ali will be
counting cuts and bruises after
the fight rather than awards
and trophies. It’s a battle bet
ween the quick and fluid (Ali) vs.
the brutal bruizer (Frazier). I
look for Muhammed to end this
one with a knockout sometime
after the seventh round.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.,
February - “It’s very satisfying
for a coach to have a team give a
full effort.”
That was Penn State wrestling
coach Bill Roll’s reaction to his
team’s 26-9 rout of Lehigh last
week.
“I’m not saying that everybody
wrestled up to their full
capabilities,” Koll notes, “but we
had a good effort from
everybody.”
The good effort resulted in
three pins, a couple of upsets and
a 9 - 0 - 1 record going into the
final dual meet of the season at
Pitt on Saturday (February 27) .
The Lions are undefeated in their
last 24 dual meets.
“Pitt will be tough,” Koll says.
“They have had a number of
injuries and other problems, but
they have recruited a lot of talent
in the last few years and they
have some depth.”
Pitt (8-2-1) has lost a number
of its top wrestlers through in
juries. In addition, three men
withdrew from school and 142-
pounder Mark Payne was
dropped from the squad.
“Before the season started, I
thought this match was going to
be the match of the year,”
Panther coach Davey Adams
said this week, “but Penn State’s
tough matches are over now.”
Koll isn’t ready to buy that.
“This should be a tough mat
ch,” the Lion coach counters.
“There are some good match
ups. They can make their season
by beating us.”

THE NITTANY CUB
Behrend Slated
On To Shenango
“On to Shenango.” These were
the words of Coach Marty
Malkin, after Behrend had
convincingly defeated Beaver
103-88. This victory vaulted
Behrend into a section-tie with
Shenango Campus. The game
was played at Dubois on
February 23, as a part of a
doubleheader which also
featured Fayette vs. New Ken
sington who also tied in their
respective sections. The winners
of the games will compete in the
Commonwealth Campus Tour
nament at New Kensington
February 26 and 27.
Coach Malkin had praise for
the three stars of the game.
“Borowy, McKinney, and
Burnett put together a fantastic
performance. I was quite pleased
with our zone-press, and the
physical contact displayed un
derneath. If we play like we did
tonight, we should have no
problem handling Shenango.”
The trio of Gary ■Borowy, Ike
Burnett, and Glenn McKinney
combined for a total of 81 points.
Borowy canned 28 points, and
pulled down 12 clutch rebounds.
The quarterback of the team,
Glenn McKinney, put on a great
second-half show, scoring 22 of
his 28 points.
Ike Burnett, however, was the
biggest asset to the Behrend
attack. The hustling Burnett,
gathered in at least a half-dozen
steals, 6 assists and 25 points.
Behrend and Beaver started
the game off even. The two teams
swapped buckets early in the
game, and it appeared the game
One of the top matches will be
at 158 pounds where Lion captain
Clyde Frantz puts his 10 - 0 record
on the line against Pitt’s John
Chatman (9 -1), a two-time PIAA
champion.
Andy Matter, the Lion’s un
defeated (10-0) 167-pound junior,
will meet Jim Fleming (5-2).
Another interesting match has
Penn State’s Dana Balum (6 - 3 -
1) against Dave Wylie (8 -2) at
134 pounds.
Lion heavyweight Dave Joyner
has taken over the team
leadership in team points scored.
Joyner has seven pins and a
forfeit win included in his 9 - 1
record for 43 points. Frantz and
Matter each have accounted for
42 points.
The Lions edged Pitt, 17 - 16,
last year to take a 19 - 7 - 2 lead in
a series that started in 1914.

Cleans Up
The Behrend Hard Corp.

basketball championship with
two overtime victories last
Saturday. The two playoff vic
tories came against the East Side
Keggers, 32 - 30, and the Huskies,
39 - 36. The Hard Corp. finished
the season undefeated at 9 - 0.
Team members were: Ed

was going to be a see-saw battle.
But with the score 12-11 in
Behrend’s favor, Coach Malkin
called time-out, and told the boys
now is - the time for the zone
press.
Malkin’s press caused
numerous Beaver turnovers,
followed by Burnett’s lay-up,
Borowy’s tip-in and McKinney’s
jumper to hike the lead 21-13.
Beaver’s Bentley countered
with two corner jump shots to cut
Jhe lead to 4. This is when Burnett
went into his act.
Ike canned a 30 foot jumper,
stole 2 passes and set up a Porath
drive to up the lead to 10, a lead
which Behrend never
relinquished.
Porath’s steal and feed to
Kwasneski; tip-ins by Borowy
and Burnett, followed by
McKinney’s full court drive,
ended the first-half which saw
Behrend lead 48-39.
Both teams started off cold in
the McKinney
calmed the Cub Five down to
secure the lead. Glenn hit two
patented set-shots, a driving lay
up, and set Burnett up for a
bucket.
Borowy then tore a rebound out
of the hands of 6-8 Williford, and
drew a two shot shoving foul to up
Behrend’s lead 55-46.
Burnett took over at this point.
Ike tipped one m over two op
ponets, and then intercepted a
pass to feed Donnell un
derneath. His defensive barrage
ended with yet another stolen
pass that set up Borowy’s three

Tom Garson is the only

Behrend ended its regular
season in a sour note, dropping its
record to 9-11. Behrend lost the
game to a powerful Edinboro
Freshman team 117-99 at
Edinboro last Saturday. Roy
Stauffer was the game’s top
scorer with 38 points. Ron
Kwasneski paced the Cubs with
26 markers. Also hitting double
figures were Gary Borowy (23
points), Glenn McKinney (24
points), and Ike Burnett (12
points).
Boyce Campus. John Fessler is
our most improved wrestler on
the team. He is a hard worker
and capable of beating anybody
when well. John will wrestle in
one of the best weight classes in
our region along with Dave
Proctor at 126 lbs. Proctor is a
good, sound wrestler who makes
very few mistakes. Dave must
stay healthy to do well in the
regionals. Mark Hedges wrestles
very hard, but mistakes have
cost him three of his four losses.”
Summarizing Behrend’s fate in
the regionals, Mr. Onorato said,
“I feel we’re taking a well
balanced squad, which, will score
some points for us. I expect at
least two of the wrestlers to place
in the tournament.”
Behrend has only had one
wrestler place in a regional
tournament, that was Bill
Groner, who lost in the 1969 semi
finals.
