Hoopsters Need Work Coach Marty Malkin was not an easy person to talk to after Behrend's first scrimmage with Academy this past Tuesday. It was not so much because he was disappointed as it was because it is hard to make much of a team's first taste of competition. Coach Malkin stressed the fact that the Cubs ". . .need a lot of hard work. Hewever, this is natural after being together only ten days" The coach called the ballhandling decent, with Glenn McKinney's work standing out, and the boardwork fair with Gary Boroway strong in that department. The defense was "good at times" according to Malkin. The Cubs shooting was the biggest disappointment, but Coach Malkin commented that, "Shooting is always the last thing to come around." Coach Malkin's final comment: "The season's a long way off and there are still a couple of open spots for anyone who's interested in coming out." SAYGSSAYS: All-Quarry: It Was A Demonstration Of Sorts By Roger Sager CUB Sports Editor The Man who will be the only undefeated Heavyweight Champion to have ever had to step into the ring for a championship fight as a challenger after already winning the title returned Monday night. He returned to cheers. The Man is the best example of just where America is today. He is an anti-hero. Over one million people, the majority non-white, paid a good sum of money to see His return. To these people, the “American Dream” of pauper to President is no longer feasible. The road the Man travelled is much closer to home, and much more desirable, for the President can’t make $1,000,000 for 9 minutes work. The Man is the epitome of the new dream. If the Man had been a typical college student, he would have another year and a half to serve on a draft evasion charge. This is forgotten however, and instead we are told to feel sorry for Him because while His court case sits in Limbo He has been deprived of the right to earn His living by His trade. Georgia Senator Leroy Johnson deemed the occasion a boon to democracy. And I thought I was going to see a heavyweight fight. Sports Action Inc., promoters of the fight, in an attempt to turn back the clock to a time when boxing champions were our fathers’ boyhood idols, and pugs and their fights were considered good, clean, and fair, and in an attempt to show that boxing hasn’t become, as the Man claims, the white man’s soliciting of the black man, Sports Action Inc. donated $50,000 to the city of Atlanta for a good and worthy cause. The worthy cause, however, snapped us back to 1970 and reality. Sports Action Inc. donated 50 G’s “to stop the flow of drugs in Atlanta”, a problem our fathers, as children, weren’t remotely aware of, a problem, in many cases, of the white man just plain soliciting TO the black man. One got the feeling that a Louis or Marciano could rightfully bemoan the fact that rather than boxers being the pawns, it is the sport itself which is now pawn. A great many people were in terested in what occurred in Atlanta Monday night for a great many other reasons than which of two. men was a better boxer. They were interested in the socio-political drama that unfolded, of the laws the fight either broke or upheld, not of whose left hook was better, or whose staying power was best. Hell, there wasn’t a fight Monday night, it was just another demonstration of sorts in the Age of Demonstrations. To those who grew up with Dempsey, Louis, and Marciano, I offer my sincerest apologies for what wehave done to a once great sport. To those my age, who have seen the travesties offered us under the billing of Heavyweight Championships, to you unfortunate people go my sympathies.
