Octobei• 8, 1970 "I Am Curious..." Not even the daring moviemakers of Sweden are ready for a film called "I Am Curious (Chaucer)," but if they ever are, it's bound to win an X rating. Because according to a professor of English at Penn State, when it comes down to good, healthy bawdiness, "we haven't even caught up with Geoffrey Chaucer." The big difference, says Dr. Robert W. Frank, one of the nation's leading Chaucerian scholars, is that Chaucer uses his bawdy, free-wheeling style to convey a message on how very human and diversified nature is. "He reminds man of his animal nature to keep him from getting too puffed up and too proud of his petty accomplishments," ex plains Dr. Frank, editor of the "Chaucer Review" and recent winner of a 1970-71 Guggenheim Fellowship -to - study - the cultural and literary backgrounds of Chaucer's Tales of Pathos. "Chaucer views man as a glorious creature who rides off to war in bright, shining armor; who woos lovely ladies with tender language; but who also comes out of the mud with a body full of appetites that indicate he's not always the glorious creature he likes to think he is." - My name is Bruce Farber. What's yours? On October 15th and 16th there will be an election for eight representatives of S.G.A. I'm running for one of these representatives because I want what's best for you. This week I will be trying to meet everyone. I would ap preciate if you my fellow-student would come up to me introduce yourself, and tell me what you want done for the benefit of this campus. Some main topics are 24 hour open dorms, sidewalks clear of snow, and the RUB building being kept open later. Sure there's a lot more to be said, so please inform me what your feelings are about such matters. I'd like to know. Remember: One thing for sure I need your support if I'm elected and if you can't give it, don't vote for me! Thank you for stopping and listening. Linda Stafford In the meantime, until the day he can go to a movie and see a faithful rendition of something like the "Canterbury Tales" Dr. Frank will always insist Chaucer's 14th century was even more outspoken and liberal than ours. The "Canterbury Tales" for example would almost certainly run the full gamut of today's ratings, from GP (acceptable to the General Public) to R (restricted) and X (absolutely Adult Only). Yet to eliminate parts of the "Canterbury Tales"—or for that matter, any Chaucer work—in favor of others would be to destroy the very essence of what Chaucer is trying to do and say, declares Dr. Frank. What is the importance of Chaucer today? "I guess the most important thing, at least to me, is that he's still a lot of fun, and there's not so much fun in the world anymore that we can afford to ignore him." replies Dr. Frank. "Beyond that, there's also a certain advantage to be able to look back 600 years and find out ways the human animal HASN'T changed." Reprint from 'On Campus". Vol. 2, No. 1 Behrend,Campus Student body must decide in the next few days whether they want a represen tative who, "Represents" or "Neglects"! I, Michael A. Chiricuzio, run for the Student Government Association. I run to provide a sincere representation for the welfare of the student body. At a later date I plan on - Having a rally open to all candidates. It will give us all a chance to discuss our issues and to present our issues to our fellow students. As a fourth-term and active student, I consider myself familiar with the problems as well as the promises of Behrend. By being elected, I hope to help make our S.G.A. an efficient and effective organization, an organization that will truly represent the varied needs and interests of the Behrend students.—tiathlene Sparks Ray Geiger THE NITTANY CUB S.G.A. Speaks Out Application, Petition, And Campaign Rules Concerning S.G.A. Elections Applications and petitions for positions on the Student Government Association have been available for nearly a week now, and several students have already begun their campaigns. Leslie McKinney, chairman of the Elections Committee, has announced the following rules for the election : (1) Applications and positions must be in by October 12. (2) Campaigning cannot begin until David Graham My name is Al Quinlan and I am a freshman running for Student Government Association as a Representative. Since I have attended Behrend I have noticed a lack of student involvement with the Erie community. Behrend has always had a small school image, which is due to two things. First of all, Behrend was always a two year school before this year. Secondly, Behrend is out of Erie and has an image of a country school. Now Behrend is a four year school and we can operate like one. I feel that we can do more for the Erie community than we've done so far. Erie has many problems, and I'll discuss how I think Behrend can help solve some of them. First of all, Erie schools have had discipline troubles in the past few years. These troubles appear to stem from racial strife, yet no one has been able to solve the problem. The only real step taken so far has been to take away some freedoms from the students. I suggest that, with the Involvement is part of living. But too many times people are apathetic and do not get involved. SGA offers a segment of the students here at Behrend a chance to become involved in the activities on our campus. I would like to be one of the students representing the rest of student body as a member of SGA. My background has been total in volvement toward serving others. But what is more im portant, I am sincere in my wish to serve my fellow students at Behrend.—Bill Starn. Linda Juliano petitions are in. (3) Posters and signs cannot be placed - a. on trees unless they are tied on b. on the yellow restraining posts unless tied on c. on the exterior of any building d. on any pointed surface of the interior of any building. (4) Positions on the ballot will be assigned by drawing lots. (5) No campaigning is permitted within 50 feet of the polls when they are open. The polls will be open Thur sday, October 15, and Friday, Al Quinlan school board's permission, we select some interested students from Behrend (and Gannon if possible) to go into the schools to talk to the students. We can talk to the students on their level and maybe we can find out things the school board and police couldn't find out. Secondly, we can make an attempt to run some type of recreation program for the small urban children. Again; we can try to get help from Gannon. Possibly we could open up Gannon Auditorium and Erie Hall, probably on weekends, for ball playing for small boys. Also, if enough girls were interested, we could open up a few rooms and the girls could guide the small girls on reading, arithmetic, and other crafts. Possibly we could raise some money with a dance or show. Thirdly, we could set up a series of teach-ins for the public. Five to ten students could research a subject which is relevant today, and present a Students, on October 15 and 16 you'll be voting for the students you want elected for the Student Government Association. I, Linda Juliano, happen to be one of the candidates running for the office of representative. In this article I hope to tell you a little bit about myself and my association with S.G.A. In the fall of last year I was elected as a representative to the S.G.A. and after that I became Corresponding Secretary. This job included writing and talking to students, faculty, and ad ministrators of Behrend and also Students I, David Graham, shall be running for a position as Representative in the Student Government Association. By living in the men's dorm I will be available for questions and discussion. If elected I will be ready to help in whatever way possible that I can. Realizing the needs of our campus I feel much more certain I, Linda Stafford, feel that I could represent my fellow classmates in the student Government Association with a sincere interest to -their desires and suggestions. This being my first year at Behrend as a transfer student, I feel that SGA would help me not only to become more a part of Penn State, but also to help those around me to feel that Penn State is an im portant part of their lives. October 16, second through sixth periods. All eight representatives will be elected at large. Applications and petitions are also available for positions on the Student Judiciary Board, which acts on student disciplinary cases. These applicants will be screened by a S.G.A. committee. Interested students may . still obtain applications, petitions, and copies of the election rules at the Union Desk. Bruce Farber program some evening to be open to the public. We could probably have one or two teach-ins a month. Finally, we could open up stands downtown containing literature on important affairs, such as the Vietnam War, the ABM system, the progress of our space program, and Draft In formation. We could probably set up stands one Saturday a month. We may need official approval from Erie. One activity of our present government that I agree with, and hope to see expanded, is the attempt to bring in outside speakers to Behrend. Charles Evers and Jack London are among those who Behrend has lined up this year, and I hope this activity is continued. I can't guarantee that these ideas will work, but I feel that we can give them a try. We'll not only make Behrend a better school, but we can help to im prove the Erie community. Al Quinlan of other Commonwealth Cam puses and University Park. Through this position I . was able to learn the problems and the ways to help solve these problems which are common to almost every Penn State Campus and student. I attended Regional and State Conferences where we all got together and discussed situations at hand. I feel much 'closer to you, the students, for having had the opportunity to work for you and I hope you'll give me that chance again this year. Sincerely, Linda Juliano that privileges here have not been properly recognized. Such as, more open dorm hours. I understand that another P.S.U. campus was recently granted this and I see no reason why this cannot come about here. Inconveniences, such as nc cigarette machines in the dorms and pay washing machine and dryers. I can see no reason these should be ingored. Thanks. I find it extremely difficult to express my sincerity when I say that by being elected, I hope to extend my own personal in volvement at the Behrend Campus to those whom I represent--the students. Through me and by me the student's wants, needs,, and ideas can be expressed in the ,student government for the improvement of Behrend and our society. Sincerely yours, Ray Geiger. Page Three
