SPORTS CUBS WIN VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP University Park was the scene this past weekend of furthur Commonwealth campus Tournaments. On Saturday, Aprill3 Behrend had the opportunity to compete against other PSU campuses in volley ball and swimming. Although did not have a swimming team, they had a championship volleyball team. Ten campuses competed all day Saturday for top honors and a trophy to take back to their home campuses But none were as lucky as Behrend, for Behrend won the tourney. The Cubs played four best-out-6f three matches winning each match. First they met Delaware campus and took the necessary two games 15-1 and 15-2 with little resistance. McKeesport was Behrend's second stepping stone to vic tory. Although showing a little more fight than Delaware, McKeesport also went down to defeat 15-4 and 15-6 Behrend had its first setback against New Kensington losing the first game 7-15. But not resting a moment `Rehrend jumped back to take the next two games and the match 13-9 and 13-10. They were ahead at the end of the time limit. In final competition the Cubs came up against New Kensington once more. Making quicker work out of them this time 17 , ,y winning the first two games 15-5 and 75-6. Behrend owes its fine performance to good team effort. Each team had one or two "stars" but it takes a team to get anywhere and Behrend had it. Congradulations are in order to Coach Sweeting who has spent many hours working with the team in the evenings after coaching baseball practice. The nine man team consisted of; acting captain Bill Cox, Bruce Rhinehart, Steve Winger, PJ Wydro, Mike Rose, Rich Seib, Mike Kuban, Ron Smith, and Gregg Wright. INTRAMURAL SOFTBALL STARTING SOON Roster deadline for intramural softball is April 19. There is a 12-man minimum and a 15 man maximum limit for team size. All games will be played Tuesdays and Thursdays during common hour. The games will be 5 innings or 30 minutes long. ERIE'S FREINDLY BOWLING CENTER With the arrival of the spring term comes the arrival of the spring sports. One of the most popular of spring sports is baseball,at Behrend. The team under the coaching of Mr. Sweeting has been busy practicing for the past few weeks and looks very promising. Coach Sweeting has said that" the team is busy with pre-season scrimmages and although it is still early, there have been a number of pleasant surprises." Among these ?pleasant surprises" are the two returning lettermen, Boyd Armstrong and Bruce Reinhart. Boyd was selected to the All-State Junior College Team last year and will be seen as starting catcher this year. Bruce was a starting center fielder last year. Both batted well over .300 last year and will be relied on heavily this sea son. The starting nine will be; pithhers Bill Chisholm, Rich Quiggle, Mike Kkowalczyk, and Bruce Reinhart; catcher, Boyd Armstrong; first base, Rich Stuart; second base, Pat Gerity; short stop, Larry Taylor; third base, Bob Sydow; left field, Mark Sandusky; right field, either Dave Karotko or a pitcher. Rounding out the roster of seventeen players is Dave Heath, Mike Kubasik, Rudy McCray, Leff Stephenson, and Dave Stokes. Last year Behrendls record was 9-4.
