FOUNDER OF CAMPUS HONORED
by Eileen Bowden
The Behrend Heritage is a story of
dedication and generosity. Through her con
cern for higher education, Mrs. Mary Behrend
donated the then Glen Hill Farm to the
Pennsylvania State University for a branch
campus to be called Behrend Center. It is
because of this extraordinary consideration
that Mrs. Behrend had for higher education
that Behrend Campus is what it is today.
And to this we would like to pay tribute by
dedicating this issue of the Cub to Mary

Pictured above is Mary Behrend receiving
the Penn State Medal from Eric Walker,
president of the University. The medal was
prorosed by the president and adopted by the
Board of Trustees in 1957, and its nrincipir
purpose is to "recognize and honor achieve
ments of persons who have made an outstand
ing contribution to higher education in
Pennsylvania." The bronze medallion was a
warded for the first time in 1958 to Mary
Behrend. The medal is prized highly by
Mrs. Behrend, and she regards it as a trib
ute to the memory of her late husband, Ernest
R. Behrend, for whom this campus was named.
