New England•—The returns from 61 towns in New Hampshire give a ma jority against the State Constabulary Act of 2,912, in a vote of 8,338. —Vermont is discussing a female suffrage amendment to the State Consti tution. In Massachusetts Gov. Claflin has a majority of 25,000 over Adams ) and of 10,000 over both opponents. The Senate will contain thirty Republicans, nine Democrats, and one Labor Reform er; and the House one hundred and sixty-six Republicans, filly Democrats, and twenty Labor Reformers. It is not known, however, how the members stand on the liquor question—the Prohibition ists claim a majority in the Senate, but concede the House to their opponents.— The 15,00 ff votes cast for the Labor Re form ticket are said to have been chiefly the votes of the Knights of St. Crispin —the shoemakers. N ew York,.—Major General John Ellis Wool died last week at Troy, in the eighty-first yeactf his age. He was distinguished for services in the war of 1812, the Mexican war, and the late struggle for the Union. He was in corn mand at New York at the commence ment of the great " Draft Riots" of 1863. An investigation into the affairs of the New York Custom-house, it is said, shows frauds reaching to $1,000,- 000. State Senator, Charles J. Folger, has accepted the position or Assistant Treasurer, to succeed GenerSlßutterfield. Between 1,300 and 1,400 distilleries are registered on the books of the Internal Revenue Department, but only about 450 are now in opera,ion, FranoB. The Cologne Gazette says that the influence exercised upon the :Emperor Napoleon 111, by Lord Clar ndon, the English Minister for Foreign Affairs was the moving cause of the changes recently made in the consti tution of France. M. Barites, the Re. publican leader of 1848, who has been in exile for many years, has returned to Paris. Ledru Rollin refuses to return to Paris, but he has not withdrawn from the canvass as a candidate for the Corps Legisiatif. Louis Blanc, however, ac cepts the nomination to the Corps in his place. —Emigrants in large numbers are now going from the South of Ireland to the French Colony of Algeria. Over a hundred men and women sailed re cently from Cork in the steamer Bona, chartered by . the French Government for the transportation of the emigrants, free of charge. —The Saxon House of Deputies has unanimously resolved that the Govern ment should 'endeavor to 'prevent the abolition of capital punishment through out North Germany.
