February 4, 2008 G PS4ports liece By MATTHEW BIRX Staff Reporter MDM337@PSU.EDU First and foremost welcome back to school everybody. I hope you all had safe and happy holidays. So far the biggest sports news I have to tell is that our star cornerback Justin King is forgoing his senior season at Penn State to enter the NFL draft. This will weaken the Nittany Lions secondary. King was the number one cornerback on the team for the past three seasons. The speculation is that King will go as either a late first round pick or a second round pick. Most draft analysts do not see him falling below the third round, though they have been wrong before. Gathering from what I have heard over the course this past year's football season most of you, the fans, are happy to see one Anthony Morelli gone from the football program. Some analysts think he will have a bright future in the NFL while others seem to be of the opinion that he will not succeed in the NFL by any means. The Lions won their bowl game against Texas A & M. The score was Penn State 24 and Texas A & M 17. Even amidst the controversy of the A & M student who made the comments about Joe Paterno. "Joe Paterno is on his deathbed and some one needs to buy him a casket," said one A&M After beating the Aggies in the Valero Alamo Bowl, Paterno had tied Bobby Bowden for the most all time Division lA Football wins He also won his record setting 23rd bowl game. His contract also expires at the close of next year's season. He has the opportunity to become the college football coach with the most wins. So will he be back after next season or will he hang up those trademark black Nike athletic shoes of his? I can not say for certain, but Penn State football without old Joepa on the sidelines will definitely be something that everyone will have to adjust to sooner or later. After speaking with some students and alumni I have gotten the feeling that though they will miss Joepa on the sidelines, it maybe time for a coaching change. John McAllister, Penn State alum, said, "I grew up watching Joepa pace those sidelines. I can imagine it will be hard to get used to the fact he won't be walking those sidelines. Although I think it would be good if Tom Bradley the defensive coordinator was his successor." Student James Kohan had this to say, "I'll miss seeing Paterno walk the sideline, yell at the refs, and lead the team out of the tunnel. I heard a rumor though that the head coach of Rutgers Univeristy will become the next coach of the Nittany Lions. I think that will work out better than anyone under Paterno's current staff but that is just my opinion." In other sports news the Penn State Harrisburg Men's Basketball team are in first place in the NEAC They are 6-10 in overall play and are 5-2 in conference play. On January 24th the men's basketball team won against Philadelphia Biblical 84-64. The women's basketball team lost handily to Philadelphia Biblical 79-38. The ladies are suffering so far in overall play with a record of 2-13 and a conference record of 1-7. Hopefully the ladies can turn it around and salvage a winning season from the remainder of the games they play. On January 22" d in Gansevoort, New York the NEAC announced the student athletes of the week ending January 20th. Penn State Harrisburg swept the awards. Seth Lewis was the men's award winner. In the 3 game stretch he had 63 points, 33 rebounds, and 17 assists. The men's team went 3-0 in that stretch Sandra Adames won for the ladies side of things. She had 3 double doubles. THE CAPITAL TIMES Around the horn with Craig Dewalt AROUND THE HORN With Craig Dewalt Ladies and Gentlemen, the last edition of the Capital Times included part one of the Around the Horn King of Kings Tournament. The tournament was going to announce the best Around the Horn panelist of all time. My intentions were that Around the Horn would end forever, so we needed to figure out who was the best Since then, I have graduated and so have some of the contestants. If you don't remember the first part of the King of Kings Tournament, let me jog your memory. The contestants were as follows: The number one seed belonged to Mr. Matthew Carroll. He was 2-4 lifetime, with a .25 win percentage. His two career wins earned him the number one seed. Carroll was a first round disappointment, and was quickly tossed from the competition. Carroll emerged onto the Around the Horn scene with his cocky, intelligent style of play but later grew lazy. Carroll was one of the first people eliminated from the King of Kings. The number two seed belonged to Mr. Charles Kupfer. Kupfer is the Penn State Harrisburg sports guru. He was 1-0 lifetime, with a 1.00 win percentage. His impressive amount of sports knowledge, and win percentage earned him the number two seed. Sarver upset Kupfer in the first round. This marked the second time that these two rivals have met. They have each won one time against the other. Kupfer outlasted everyone else in the losers bracket earning him a spot in part two of the King of Kings. The number three seed belonged to Mr. Joshua Eggleston. Eggleston is a Penn State alumnus who specializes in football knowledge. He is 1-1 lifetime with a win percentage of .5, which earned him the number three seed. Eggleston hasn't lost yet in the tournament, and rallied his way into the winners bracket showdown in part two The number four seed belonged to Mr. Kris Aumiller. Aumiller is known for his modeling career and his Colgate smile. Aumiller is 1-4 in his career with a win percentage of .2. Aumiller was another quick exit from the tournament. He left with Carroll and who knows what the two of them are doing right now. Last I saw, they were crying with each other, wrapped in blankets watching the Notebook. It's a sad, depressing story. I feel bad, but they should have brought their A game. The number five seed goes to Mr. Matthew "Sary Money" Sarver. Sarver was dedicated to take out Kupfer, which he did in round one They can still meet again though in the championship. He is 1-5 lifetime with a win percentage of .17. He has been on a hot streak lately with a string of good answers. We'll have to see how he finishes the tournament. The number six seed went to Mr. Matthew McComas. He is known for his impressive dance skills which include "Beat It" and jazz. He is 0-4 lifetime with a win percentage of 0, but don't let that fool you. He has a wide array of sports knowledge. McComas is still alive, and he is looking to gain the respect of the viewers and fellow contestants. McComas has graduated, and is currently giving Wii Tennis lessons at the local YMCA. Instead of ending Around the Horn with this King of Kings tournament, I have decided to crown one of the remaining four contestants the new Around the Horn author The winners bracket showdown was supposed to feature Sarver, McComas and Eggleston. First of all, McComas hasn't won a single Around the Horn to date, so he was an easy answer. No. Next I look at the matchup between Eggleston and Sarver. I see a lot of potential in both contestants. Eggleston is an Eagles fan, and Sarver likes the Steelers. They each get a negative 1 for that. Sarver thinks Polomalu is better then Ed Reed. I probably spelled Polomalu wrong, which further demonstrates my point that Ed Reed is better. He's a better athlete, a bigger playmaker, and his name is easily spelled. That's a negative 1 for you Sarv. Eggleston though, is a T.O. hater. For that you get negative 2. Sarver, due to your recent support of T. 0., I am matching you up against Kupfer in the finals. When I look at Kupfer and Sarver, I see a sizzling rivalry. One of epic proportions. I see a man who knows everything about sports, and a man who thinks he knows everything about sports. Kupfer is a man who knows facts, figures and everything about sports If you try and argue with him, he will prove you wrong. That's where it ends. You're wrong, he's right. End of story. Sarver always thinks he's right about sports, which reminds me of myself. He'll try and prove you wrong, and bash you in the process Because of this, Sarver is the NEW Around the Horn author. Does that mean he's the King of Kings? No. Kupfer is and will always be Penn State Harrisburg's King of Kings. Don't you forget that. When you see him in the halls, bow to him. He is now, THE KING. As for Sarver, he's not the King of Kings. Infact, he's not even the Queen of Queen's. He is just Matt Sarver, the Around the Horn author He may not know everything factual about sports. Hey, that's what the internet is for. Sarver brings the personality needed for this job. As for the new Around the Horn contestants? Let's just say Aumiller and Carroll are not finished. There will also be two new guests. Who will they be? You'll have to wait until next time to find out. Sarver will be that judge. There may be a contestant coming out by the name of... Craig Dewalt. I just hope Sarver can find some good competition. Because if I go up against Aumiller and Carroll, the results are going to be the same as Sarver taking on a five year old child with both of his hands tied behind his back, in Wii Tennis. The five year old kid will win...EVERYTIME!!! Thanks for all of you that actually took the time to read this giant monster of an article known as Around the Horn over the last few semesters Thanks to Marin for letting me have the space required for this beast. Thanks to Roo for making this front page material back in the Spring of 07. Thanks to Mahoney for hating the fact that this article was front page material. Thanks to Carroll for selling us out at the Laserdome. Thanks to Aumiller for that Colgate smile. Thanks to McComas for making me laugh everytime I hear "Beat It". Thanks to Kupfer for my A in Sports History. Thanks to Josh Eggleston for leaving my softball team during our championship game because he had to go home. Thanks to Oliver for putting a Wii in the office for the Carroll, McComas and Dewalt connection to eliminate all competition in Wii Tennis. Thanks to everyone who continues to help out with THON. Most importantly, thank you to Sarver for taking over this article without any prior knowledge of doing so when this was printed.of the games they play. That's right ladies and gentlemen. I didn't even ask Sarver to continue. As you are reading this and finding out about the new host, so is he. P.S. if you see Aumiller in the hall, kick him in the nuts. Tell him Belicheat sucks, and call him a Patriots Bandwagon. He likes it.
