Lions crush Temple, 47-0 By MATTHEW SARVER Sports Reporter MDSSOII@PSU.EDI On Saturday, November 11 the Penn State Nittany Lions welcomed the hopeless Temple Owls. The Owls came in to Happy Valley after getting their first win a few weeks ago against Bowling Green. Their win was the first in twenty games dating back to 2004 against Syracuse. Penn State would not be there second win of the year though. On this day it would become Hunting Season for the Nittany Lions, led by their Senior Running back Tony Hunt. Hunt finished the day with 16 carries for 167 and four touchdowns (3 rush, 1 receiving). Tony would also reach the 1,000 yard mark for the season, and the 3,000 yard mark for his collegiate career. The other significant point about this game was Joe Patemo would not be coaching from the sidelines After being injured last Saturday at Wisconsin, successtul surgery on Sunday to repair his broken leg, JoePa missed only his second game on the sidelines in the last three decades. However Joe was still there in spirit. Before the game he called the team and gave them a pep-talk over the speakerphone in the locker room. “What really hit home is when he said, ‘Good luck guys, I love you’,” star linebacker Paul Posluszny said. “Even though he wasn’t here, he was definitely with us in spirit.” And the Nittany Lions wouldn’t let that spirit die. On the opening drive it looked at first as if it was going to be a long day for the Lions. The second play of the game, Morelli threw an interception to Temple’s David r(l }j#\y,eye'V the defense came through, like it did all year, and caused Temple’s Travis Shelton to fumble on the Owls’ first play. After that Penn State did not look back. A long completion of 29 yards by Morelli to Freshman Andrew Quarless, on third down set up Tony Hunt on the very next play. He took the hand off and bounced outside the tackle and darted 22 yards for the Touchdown. The next series for the Nittany Lions would finish almost the same way. After Temple failed on a fake punt, Tony Hunt, on second down, pounded through the Owls defenders and rumbled in for a 26 yard touchdown. This gave Tony two touchdowns in under four minutes. The Penn State defense came roaring again, causing the Owls to go three and out. After an illegal formation by the Owls, punter Jake Brownell sailed a booming kick into the dangerous arms of Derrick Williams. Finally, the Sophomore did something the Nittany Lion fans have been waiting for. He received the kick did a quick spin move and turned opposite field, sprinting past all the Owls and returned the punt for a seventy-five yard touchdown, giving the Nittany Penn State Nittany Lions run out into Beaver Stadium to achieve victory over Temple last Saturday. Lions a 21 -0 with only nine minutes gone in the game. The Nittany Lions defense really played a strong game. They held Temple to five straight three-and outs and did not let the Owls see the Nittany Lions side of the field for the entire game. The defense caused four turnovers all led by Linebacker U; Paul Posluszny, Sean Lee, and Dan Conner. As the second quarter began Penn ~ State, mwched, down. ttefvdd, again behind the work-horse Tony Hunt. After a forty-one yard scamper by Tony down the Owls nine, Penn State wasn’t able to punch it for a touchdown. However, Kevin Kelly did come through for the lions making an 18 yard field goal giving Penn State a 24-0 lead. It was Tony Huntagain, onlythistimeffom 11 yards giving him three rushing touchdowns in the first half. Penn State went into the locker room with a comfortable 31-0 lead. The second half would not get any better for Temple. After getting shutdown on their opening drive, Tony Hunt put the exclamation point on his career day. On third and goal from the Temple 11, Morelli found Hunt out in the flat allowing him to barrel his way into the end zone for the fourth time. Finally it was time to give the second string a chance. On the first series for Penn State in the fourth quarter, back-up quarterback Daryll Clark found his way into the end zone putting the exclamation mark on a fabulous game for the Nittany Lions. Clark’s one yard plunge was the first, of hopefully many, in his career at Penn State. The Nittany Lions went to win the game by the final score of 47-0, giving the Nittany Lions there second shutout of the year. After the game captains Levi Brown and Paul Posluszny took a little trip across State College to visit JoePa at home. Along with them came the game ball from there victory. The two captains promised the team that they would deliver the game ball to Joe because they know his pep-talk before the game was what really helped them get through the night and capture t he victory. Up next for the Nittany Lions is a home showdown with a very confusing Michigan State team. Their year has really been a roller coaster ride. The releasing of their head coach, John L. Smith in the middle of the year, then after giving up one of the biggest leads to Notre Dame, the Spartans a few weeks later came back from 35 point deficit to defeat the Northwestern Wildcats. This Spartan team is looking for some way to end their season on a high note. To do it they have to come through Happy Valley and play the, Nittany Lions on Senior Day. This will be the last game at Beaver Stadium for Senior Stars Tony Hunt, Paul Posluszny, and Levi Brown. Hopefully the Nittany Lions will come out firing on all cylinders like they did against the Owls. My prediction- Penn State 35 Michigan State 10. Both teams made it to the playoffs last year as fledgling programs, with the men bowing out in the playoffs and the women suffering a frustrating loss in the PSUAC Championship game. This high level of success prompted Both the men and women's basketball team hope for another successful season this year. Students are encouraged to attend games, free-of-charge and to support PSH athletics. strong showings at pre-season workouts and tryouts. Men’s head coach Kirk Ream said, “We had 22 individuals try out for the team this year. Everyone who tried out worked very hard and we had to make some very tough decisions on who was going to make the team. Tryouts will help this year’s team because it has instilled a competitiveness in our players that will last throughout the year.” The men’s team lost two key contributors in Tim Hurtack and Padraic Wood, but they have eight strong returning players. When questioned if he would like to mention any exceptional new or returning players, Ream said, “We have two all conference performers back in Abe Hitz and Nealy Rawlings, but are looking for all players to contribute. We need each player to do their job in order to be successful.” When asked about how the team was coming together after the first few weeks Ream said, “The guys are working very hard. We are moving along and looking forward to our first scrimmage and game. It is very nice to have some returning players from last year that know what we expect from them. We have been able to progress faster than last year because of this familiarity.” Rather than focusing on setting lofty goals for their overall record or post season play, which could potentially distract the team from playing their best in each game, Coach Ream and his team have decided to “take one game at a time and strive to play to the best of our abilities. Our goal as always is to be the best team we can be.” The women’s team, who made it to the championship game last year with a roster of only seven players, is enjoying the fact that they lost no one to graduation and have acquired three new players. HbWtVer; they will lose one player, Kristen Koether, to graduation in December. When asked if their larger roster will provide more depth and hopefully even more success, head coach Marissa Graby Hoover said, “These girls will be successful no matter how deep the bench is.” November 20, 2006 Coach Graby Hoover commented on the coming-together of the new team by saying, “The team is working very well together and I have big expectations for their success. The new girls fit right in and the dynamic of the team is extremely positive and motivated.” Conference standout Brooke Conjar garnered a significant amount of attention last year for her superb play, but Coach Graby Hoover was hesitant to single out any one player as being more exceptional than another. She said, “All of the girls are exceptional and each girl contributes valuable skills that give our team great balance. Everyone knows what they can do to help the team succeed and each is an important part of the puzzle.” When asked if the women’s team during practices. She said that they are “a big part of our preparation for success” and that she “would like to thank them for their dedication to the team and willingness to help us reach our potential.” The team’s coaches and players are clearly excited about their upcoming seasons and the PSH community should be too! Basketball games provide a free evening of entertainment and the teams genuinely appreciate as much positive fan support as they can get. Many of the home Jaimes this year will be double-headers, with the women playing first and the men playing second. The full schedules can be viewed by clicking on the Intercollegiate Athletics link on the PSH website.
