Entertainment Tune in to The Commercials, By Corey Barbush, Staff Reporter and Sean Wright, Staff Reporter mango26B6@aol.com sean44l9@aol.com On October 16, we sat down for an interview with two members of the band, The Commercials, before they played a show in Lititz, PA. We talked for about twenty minutes and it was a lot of fun for all involved. Plus, we didn’t have to pay to get in and we got free pizza. Q: What are your names and what instrument do you play? Tony: My name’s Tony and I play guitar. Drew: I’m Drew and I play bass and sing lead vocals. Tony: And we’re missing Tom who plays guitar and sings and Dan who plays drums. Q: What genre of music, if any, would you place yourselves in? Drew: Usually we like to tip-toe around the question and just say “rock and roll.” Keep it generic that way we don’t commit to any thing. Q: What are some of your musi cal influences? Tony: That’s hard. We all have a lot of similar influences. I think at the root of a lot of stuff we come from a lot of punk, hardcore, indie rock and that whole kind of vibe. Drew: We go everywhere. Tom and I are into jazz and stuff like that too. Tony: We have a drummer who listens to jam stuff and I’m into a lot of pop 80’s stuff too. Q: Recently, what bands have ypu been listening to? Drew: I’ll tell ya, I have been lis tening intensely to the new Jimmy Eat World record and the new Hot Rod Circuit record. Tony: Yeah, both good. Q: Where are you guys all from? Tony: We’re pretty much all from the Harrisburg area, towns out side and around Harrisburg, where we grew up. Q: How and when did you guys decide to form a band? Tony: The band actually started, I guess almost eight years ago now. Tom and I started the band and we had known Andy for a long time and we asked him to join. We’ve had a lot of different line-up changes since then. We were like sixteen when we start ed and still in high school. Q: The chick from Law & Order (Mariska Hargitay) or the chick from E.R. (Maura Tierney)? Drew: Uh oh, Tony’s a Law & Order fan, 50... Tony: See, you know what though, she looks totally different right there. Is that her? That’s like a totally different... Drew: I don’t know, man. Maybe she got botox or somethin’. Tony: She looks like way older now. I think I’m gonna have to go E.R. chick. Drew: Yeah, I'm gonna go with the popular vote there. Q: What are some of the bigger bands that you have toured with? Tony: We toured with Me Without You. They’re on Tooth & Nail Records and they’re pretty big now. We toured with Bayside on Victory Records. We’ve played with a lot of really big bands but not necessarily toured with them. We’ve played with At the Drive-In, the Ataris, Saves The Day, the Starting Line, Taking Back Sunday, and all kinds of really big bands. Q: Who’s the best James Bond? Drew: I dunno. Pierce has been doin’ a good job, I think. I think local band coming he convinces me Tony: Sean Connery's good though too. Drew: Well, it’s hard though cause it’s like...he set the stan dard so long ago. I think Pierce Brosnan has the best look though for Bond. Q: What’s the best part of play ing live? Drew: Well, for me... 1 know the other guys don’t do this, but when we play I actually look at the people that are watching us just to see the way they’re react ing to what we’re doing and that The Commercials are (from left to right): Tony Bavaria, Dan Jones, Drew Teague and Tom McGrath. The band has been playing locally for about eight years. they’re just as excited about it as we are. That’s just amazing to Tony: I don’t maybe look people right in eye, like not direct eye contact. Drew: Oh, I do. [laughs] Tony: But I like seeing the crowd, if the crowd’s into it that’s the best part cause if you can see the crowd having fun and enjoying themselves along with what you’re doing, that’s always the best part about playing live. Drew: Tom always looks at his guitar or his amp, nothing else, [laughs] Q: Do you feel that your music has grown since you began and between each record? Drew: [laughs] Yeah, tremen- dously. Tony: I think everything has been gradual though. I think if you listen to all the stuff we’ve done, you would see a gradual change. But I think definitely if you would compare our newest stuff to our first record you’d be like “Oh my God.” Q: When you guys aren't play ing music what do you like to do? Drew: Uh, we all keep really busy outside of the band. In fact, we all pretty much have regular jobs still, because we’re not making nearly enough money from the band to pay our bills. So, besides that, we all have hobbies and stuff that we do. Tony owns a club. Tony: Yeah, a lot of work. But a lot of the work is fun work. Like, I own that club and that’s fun. It’s a lot of work, but it’s something I enjoy. Drew: Tony and I both play in other bands too, side projects. They’re different styles of music. It's just fun. Tony: I would never go and lis ten to stuff like that, but it’s just fun to play. Q: Where’s the farthest you’ve traveled to play a show? Drew: We’ve played pretty much everywhere in the conti nent, other than Mexico. I don’t know if that would go over so well, [laughs] Q: What’s your favorite movie of all time? Tony: Star Wars Trilogy. to PSH Drew: You know what, I’m gonna have to go out on a limb and say Garden State. I’ve recently seen it a couple times and it was an amazing movie. Tom loves Eternal Sunshine and I like it too. Tony: See, I didn’t like Eternal Sunshine that much. I was not feelin’ it. Drew: You’re not cool, dude Tony: Sorry. Drew: You’re not cool like me and Tom. Tony: Sorry. Q: Happy Gilmore or Billy Photo courtesy of www.thecommercials.org Madison? Drew: Happy Gilmore, dude. Tony: Yeah. Drew: Totally Happy Gilmore. I didn’t even have to think about that. Q: What was the first album you ever bought and do you still lis ten to that artist today? Tony: The first album I ever bought was a Beach Boys live album, and I do still like the Beach Boys. Drew: Is the question “CD” or “album?” [laughs] You knew we were old. Ok, cuz this is before CD’s. I don’t remember, man. It would have been a tape. Tony: Yeah, mine was a tape too. Drew: I remember I got an Extreme single. It was called “Hole Hearted.” I think that was the first actual tape I ever bought with my own money. I was in like 4th or sth grade. Q: Name something interesting about each of you. Drew: Oh, man, I gotta think of something interesting about myself. I’m a card-carrying Native American through blood line on my mom’s side. And I was born in Germany. That’s kind of interesting. Tony's not interesting. He’s got a club and that’s all he’s got. Q: What’s the largest venue you’ve played at? Drew: Uh, we played Emo’s in Austin, Texas, which is apparent ly a very very well-known club. Other than that, we always play the weird ones. I dunno. Q: What’s your favorite video game? Drew: The band’s favorite video game is the Madden Football series. We go crazy in our van on tour. Like we’ll get violent with each other playing Madden Football. Me, personally, I really like the Thief games for the PC and now Xbox. The Commercials will be play ing in the food court in the Olmsted Building November 4th, along with The Vacancy, Hey Mike, and Koji on the Roof. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. The show is free to everyone, includ ing non-students.
