Elaine Brown: The Legacy of the Black Panther Party In 1974 Elaine Brown became the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party. In her memoir, A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story, she recounts her life from the ghettos of North Philadelphia to her leadership in one of the country's most important and militant civil rights groups. Today she works with Mothers Advocating Juvenile Justice to free incarcerated children and the Legal Defense Committee for Michael "Little B" Lewis, tried as an adult and sentenced to life imprisonment at age 14 for a crime he did not commit, as Brown writes in her forthcoming book, New Age Racism and the Condemnation of "Little B."
