Jacobs Editor Penn State Harrisburg (PSH) students may have noticed the addition of a student activity fee in their Fall 1996 charges. The fee went into effect this semester. The $25 per semester fee was approved by the University Board of Trustees last fall and is charged to students on a pro-rated basis, depending upon the number of credits a student is registered for. Director of Student Affairs, Conald Holtzman said that the purpose of this fee is to improve the the quality of the students' experience at their particu lar Penn State campus. PSH decides how to have this fee happen;' he said, "but they also wanted the money to stay at their own campuses and not go elsewhere." Vice President of Student Affairs, William Asbury developed a com mittee to determine how this new funding should be spent at the campus level. The committee utilized stu dent opinions gathered from all Penn State cam- puses last spring to set guidelines on how campus es could use the new fund ing, Holtzman said. Those guideline were issued to campuses this summer. According to the 1996-1997 Student Activities Fee Manual, `The students asked its student activity fee will be seven categories for fund- ing were defined by the committee (see chart at the end of this article). The General Student Activity Fee Board at University Park will review the use of funds at each campus to ensure that the activity fee money is used for the purposes stated in the guidelines. Individual campuses will develop their own annual spending plans and allocate funds through a Campus Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee. This committee is comprised of 12 members including seven students, one of which is the student government association (SGA) president; two staff, one of which is the director NEWS for funding Director of Student Affairs, Donald Holtzman and Student Government President, Frank Nieves are the co-chairs of the Penn State Harrisburg Campus Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee of student affairs; and one faculty member.
