Older women students share experiences Yvette Martin Staff Reporter Penn State Harrisburg offers four "get-togethers" catering to Penn State women of non-traditional age, which will give female students aged 24 and older an opportunity to meet and share experiences and problems that non-traditional students face. Steve Backels, Coordinator of Personal Counseling, Janet Widoff, Coordinator of Student Activities and Donna Howard, Assistant Coordinator of Non traditional Student Affairs, are facilitators of the Reentry Woman Networking program for older female students at PSH. This program is partially funded by the EOPC, (Equal Opportunity Planning Committee) at University Park, which disperses money to meet the needs of underserved student populations. The Personal Counseling, Student Activities and Academic Development departments at PSH also fund the program. Backels, entering his fourth year at PSH, developed this program, PSH student dies from accidental overdose Cathy Nolan Staff Reporter A Penn State Harrisburg student died Nov. 11 at Hershey Medical Center, from an accidental overdose of alcohol and Tylenol. Richard Maus, 30, of 815 A Weaver Ave., Meade Heights, was reportedly taken to Hershey Medical Center by a friend between 8 P.M. and 10 P.M. on Nov. 10. He was declared dead Nov. 11 at 6:15 P.M., according to Hershey Medical Center public relations staff assistant Frances Bernier. According to his roommates, Maus, affectionately known as "Rick the Pool Player", was an EEL major at Another source of income that flows from cars on campus is the money from traffic violations. Jackson said this money is deposited into the college-endowed scholarship account that is arranged with the Student Government Association. "Last year, funds from parking penalties put $4,721 into the account," South said. The S.G.A. voted on what to do with the funds it was going to receive from traffic citations. Suggestions were discussed such as Thomas' idea of purchasing a MAC machine for the campus, or another project, such as plan of one big annual along with Janet Widoff, two years ago. Reentry Woman Networking is offered only at PSH, although students from other Penn State campuses can attend the meetings. "Janet and I developed this program for the underserved population on campus, women of non traditional age," said Backels. "This offers them a way to meet one another and get information in informal meetings." The coordinators of Reentry Woman Network attempt to adhere to the need of non-traditional students by providing them with information without a lot of commitment and a comfortable setting outside of the classroom. "We try to help them feel more comfortable and feel more a part of the campus," Backels said. "They can be more aware of support, talk to faculty and learn about where to get tutoring." In January, when new students arrive, Backels expects more students of non-traditional age. This will increase the 12 percent of Reentry women at PSH. "We understand that non- PSH since Fall 1992. Maus believed he had a cold, according to a room mate, and was taking Tylenol for it. They said he was not drinking at that time. When his friend, an alumni of PSH, came to visit, he decided to take Maus to the hospital. According to Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick, Maus' death was caused by an accidental overdose, caused by a mixture of alcohol and medication. "It would be safe to say his death was a result of a combination of alcohol and medication, which caused a multi-system failure," Hetrick said. PSH Master Plan unveiled The Penn State Harrisburg "Master Plan", the strategy by which the campus is to be developed, was unveiled on Octoberl2 at a public meeting in the auditorium. The four main issues direct- ing the plans for relocating or con structing the components of the new campus include: (1) circulation of vehicles and pedestrians; (2) space needs; (3) campus aesthetics; and (4) potential property acquisitions. The general blueprint shows Olmsted Road being moved to the other (east) side of the Olmsted Build ing, keeping vehicle traffic out of the way of foot traffic between the aca demic buildings. This policy could be affected by state legislation recently signed into law by Governor Robert Casey. The law mandates that the Commonwealth's colleges and universities make police incident reports available to the public on a daily basis. According to University spokesperson Steve Hevner, police incident reports will now be updated on a daily, rather than weekly, basis, beginning Nov. 21.
