FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Welcome to the first issue of the fall 1994 Capital Times. For those of you who have read this paper before, you may notice a few changes. First of all, it may surprise you that there is a paper at all. Apparently last semester, only two issues were published. Secondly, if you can remember back that far, the average issue of the Capital Times is usually twice this size. There are a few reasons why this issue is short. The most prominent being that when I arrived on campus and accepted the position of editor-in chief, I had no elected staff. Essentially, I had to pick the paper up out of the dust. But we are here now, and I have a lot planned. For starters, we are aiming for seven issues this semester, something I'm not sure has ever been done. I am also looking at covering a wider range of stories that are more applicable and interesting to students. This alone, however, probably won't be enough. What the Capital Times needs to do, is remind the students that they are paying to attend this college and they do not have to accept the status quo. I hear a lot of complaining. The Capital Times is here to be your voice, Even if at times we also are here to be the voice of reason What we need, in addition, is you. The more help we get, the stronger we are. We need to fight the wave of apathy and not be afraid to question why things are the way they are. Things change. So wake up! Do something! Rattle a few cages and also spotlight some things that you like. Join our staff. We are in need of reporters, copy editors, a cartoonist, and a photographer. If you can't join us, but would still like to help, feel free to put any ideas you have down on paper with your name and phone number (which we can withhold by request), and slide them under our door at W-341 Olmstead. Your ideas don't have to be limited to this campus either. I know it is sometimes hard to forget there is a world beyond Three Mile Island and PSH. This editor is not afraid to try to make a difference. Vehicular reminders for PSH The Department of Safety/Police Services would like to remind the Campus Community that the "Handicapped & Reserved Parking Spaces" in front of the Olmsted Building are reserved 24 hours a day including weekends. Persons who violate this are subject to be issued a Traffic Violation Notice. If you have any questions concerning this please call Police Services at 948-6232. It has come to the attention of the Department of Safety/Police Services that operators of motor vehicles are failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Section 3542 "Right-of-Way of Pedestrians in Crosswalks," Mandatory Capital Times Staff Meeting on Tuesday, September 20, at 12:30, in W -341. All current staff and those interested in joining should attend. YOUR NAME DOES NOT HAVE TO BE "BILL" TO WRITE IN OUR NEWSPAPER!!! THE CAPITAL TIMES E. Mikael Hein Editor-in-Chief requires that all vehicles must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Failure to abide by the law can result in an issuance of a Commonwealth Citation in the amount of $84.00. The Department of Safety/Police Services will be enforcing this law to make sure that vehicles are abiding by the law and stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks. Escort Service for the Fall Semester of 1994 schedule will be as follows: Sunday- Thursday 6:00 pm - 11:30 pm. Persons requiring an Escort need to contact Police Services at 948-6232. Three of us staffers, Erik, Stacey, and myself (Anne-Marie) were sitting in the office after a full day of caffeine, pizza and cookies, deciding how to fill up the giant void on page three when I piped up, "Why don't we havea top ten list like Letterman?" My two comrades agreed by nodding, and then set to the task of deciding the subject of our list.
