SiSPORTS Lions on the highway to mediocrity. Tim Brown Capital Times Staff Sitting on the edge of my seat and biting my fingernails, I felt a rush of unbridled joy as it seemed that Penn State would not beat West Virginia, but lady luck punched me dead in the jaw. Penn State pulled it out at the last minute. Going into the final moments of the game, it seemed that they would be destined for yet another mediocre season that I could laugh insanely about, but the Lions killed my laughter. I hate luck. I hate Penn State. Enough said. But before I leave the subject of Penn State football I must remind everyone that they lost to Boston College right after they lost to Miami. Two losses in a row at home does not a great team make. Just when everyone thought that Miami would go 19-0 and take it all, they lost to the Colts. The Colts?! Let me say it a little louder, THE COLTS!!! The game ended when Dan Marino threw a pass into Steve Emtman's hand. The 6-foot-5-inch, 300 pound-plus defensive end ran the ball back 90 yards for a game clinching touchdown. Penn State Harrisburg has worked out a deal with WMSS 91.1 FM to broadcast our home games. Keep an ear out for them. As you know, the back doors at the CUB have been locked, and the only way in or out has been through the main doors. Now there is a new twist to the situation. All of the doors that have previously been locked are now going to be alarmed starting Monday, Nov. 2. Former assistant basketball coach Gary Markle has been named head coach this season at PSH. His new assistant will be Billy Calahan. If there is anyone who would like to teach an aerobics class here on campus, do not hesitate to call Ron Davis at 948-6288. How can you mention winning the Super Bowl and losing to the Colts in the same sentence? What has happened to all of the "great teams" of the NFL? The Eagles barely beat Phoenix, Washington had to rely on five field goals to beat Minnesota and the Giants...l won't even mention them (they are too old to see the print anyway). Even my Bills (yes I'm a Bills fan. Shut up.) struggled against the lowly Jets. It's a new dawn a'rising in the NFL. Here's something I found to be thought-provoking: The University of Pittsburgh's athletic director feels a little concerned about Pitt's football team. He probably wouldn't if he fired coach Paul Hackett. He was fired by the 49ers and the Cowboys for being a horrible offensive coordinator. You're supposed to learn from mistakes, not add to them. Even though he has three years left on his contract it's time for Paul to say goodbye to Pittsburgh before Pitt says goodbye to him. The Toronto Blue Jays came to individuals who could teach classes being offered in the afternoon and the evening. Both males and females are welcome to apply. Anyone interested in intramural sports, namely racquetball and walleyball, can get more information at 948-6288. After the Christmas break, Ron Davis will be starting a three-on-three basketball tournament. If you are interested, give Ron a call. The soccer and volleyball teams finished their seasons with less than outstanding results. The soccer team compiled a 1-9 record and the volleyball team set a 2-10 record, winning both their first and last games. "It's satisfying to end on a positive note," said volleyball coach Ron Davis. "We worked hard all year and put it together in the last match of the season. It was nice for the sake of the players." Serving Penn State Harrisburg Students, Staff and Faculty Since 1972 America and stole America's pastime from under us. Everyone was so worried about the Japanese coming here and stealing our culture, when all the while our neighbors to the north jumped our border and robbed us. This was the first international match up in a World Series and we blew it big. I don't want to seem too negative (okay, maybe I do) but this adds to the idea that America can't compete in the international field. If some country (like lowly Canada) can come in and take our game from us, what is stopping the rest of the world from doing the same to our businesses? Now that baseball's over, free agency can begin. What teams are going to shell out the bucks for a Bonds, a Drabek, a McGwire, a Cone or a Sierra? I think the Phi Hies could use one--if not all--of these players. With the economy what it is, I'm sure the players won't get what they're looking for. Yeah, and I support Penn State football. It's only preseason in the NBA, but it should be somewhat competitive, right? Enter the new looking Philadelphia 76ers minus one Charles Barkley. It's gonna be a long year. How many points will Mario Lemeiux score this year...loo, 200, a million?? He is on an incredible pace this part of the season. Look for the Penguins to three peat as champs. Garrison Hearst, everyone who has ever heard of this guy raise your hand...l believe this guy will win the Heisman (no I don't, but everyone says he will). This Georgia running back has an average of 8.1 yards per carry, 16 touchdowns and has 1,232 yards. Look out Herschel. Whatever happened to O.J. McDuffie? I have to say congratulations to one of my boys, Troy Drayton, one of the great tight ends at PSU. He started as a walk-on player and now he's a scholarship player. He gets better and better every game. Look for him in the pros. I would also like to thank Jason Sandhaus for his "wisdom" and guidance. Until we meet again, Peace.
