Slow season isn't worryiog coach Tim Brown Capital Times Staff Most rookie coaches sitting on a 1-4 record would see nothing but problems with his squad. However, most rookie coaches aren't Ron Davis, PSH's new women' volleyball coach. Davis, a former Division I coach in the Atlantic 10 Conference at St. Bonaventure and former assistant on University Park' S women's team, is philosophical about the season. "It's tough, but it's no one's fault, Davis said. "It's the nature of thy, campus...a lot of students have nigh' classes and other things that interfere wi practices." That's about as negative as Davis gets All he asks is that the players give the Columnist" Tim Brown Capital Times Staff For those of you who are still upset at Penn State losing to Miami 17-14, GET OVER IT! I told you last issue that Penn State, didn't have a chance against Miami. Sure Miami had a couple of rough games, but against Pennsylvania's finest (yeah right!), they could do no wrong. Everyone is crying about how Penn States chances for a National Championship are now ruined, but they were never really contenders for the throne anyway. Mistake after mistake is what caused Penn State to lose, it would seem that they couldn't handle the pressure of playing the "big game". Maybe if Miami had a Heisman contender, we would have won. To be a Champion, you cannot make the mistakes that our beloved Nittany Lions made. Penn State came crashing down to I gm mew 1111111 OM MI MO -1 STUpENTS Let Sera Tec be Ifisur ticket to extra cash! "It's hard to build unity when there's no consistency," Davis said. "But the students are going out there and giving 100 percent." As the season progresses, Davis feels the players are doing well and is pleased with their progress. "I think the girls are doing some very good things and are getting better and better." Davis said that sometimes what is learned on the court is better than what shows on the scoreboard. "They are gaining a lot by having the opportunity to compete at the varsity level," Davis said. "And that. is at times more important than wins or losses." "The girls want to play hard and get some experience," Davis said. "It's good to have people like that on the team." ogs" Pennsylvania sports teams earth after going into the Miami game with a 5-0 record and a one-point favorite against the 'Canes, but they couldn't run with the big dogs. Boston College, 4-0-1, is Penn State's TB'S IN THE HOUSE potential next victim, unless the boys in Happy Valley can't bounce , back from this loss, which I think they will. The Lions will be 10-1 at the end of the season and they will go to the Blockbuster Bowl so let us leave it at that. Not to rub salt in an open wound, but I can't pretend to be upset at their loss. It's not because I'm a cruel, unfeeling person (okay, I am) but maybe now this will finally shut up all of those PSU fans who thought their team was God's gift to the world. Let me say this, the Atlanta Braves are going to win the World Series after they beat the crap out of the Pirates, they now lead the series 3-1. This will be the year they make it, but lose to the Braves. There's always next year. Eric Lindros, Philadelphia's million dollar kid, has the Flyers off to a hot start at 2-0-1. Speaking of Philly teams, the Eagles got DOGGED by the KC Chiefs on Sunday, 24-17. I think they got a little too cocky after stampeding the Cowboys 31-7 in their Monday night rffair. Is it me, or is there not one good football team in the state of Pennsylvania? I think this was the week that good ol' PA was not destined to win a damn thing anywhere. What do you think about the Lakers signing Magic Johnson for $l4 million for one season? He's now enjoying training camp in Hawaii hula dancing with Cookie. Does he deserve that much money for not even playing a full season? I don't think so. And then there are the old men of basketball, the Celtics. Larry Bird and his bad back have retired. Where do they go' from here? An old folks home?? They took a step by signing 'the X-man, Xavier McDaniel. Now he just has to show up for every game to play. Look for the Celts to finish, at best, in third place behind a new look Knicks team and a rejuvenated Nets team coached by the master himself, Chuck Daly. Until we meet again, peace. TO.
