4/PSH NEWS January 20, 1992 VISA provides passport to Olympics for photographer Elin Marcel Capital Times Staff Most husbands cringe when their wives whip out their credit cards, but Darrell Peterson says it's not a problem. Peterson, Penn State Harrisburg's senior photographic technician, and his wife Debra, will spend four days at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, as winners in the VISA Winter Olympics Sweepstakes. In the contest, every time a customer used a VISA card, his name was automatically entered into the sweepstakes. Peterson said Debra's name was entered when she charged $l4 of gasoline. "She’s the one who won," Peterson said. "I'm her guest, and she doesn’t let me forget that.” The couple found out about their good fortune on Dec. 21, when they received a certified letter from VISA. "It was a typical sweepstakes type thing...'Congratulations, you've won a trip to the Winter Olympics in the VISA Sweepstakes,'" Peterson said. The letter also included affadavits for the Petersons to sign, including one saying that VISA jimiimiiiimiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiu | Tbe Student Handbook, 1991-92, incorrectly lists the dates of | | SPRING BREAK *92 as the week of March 2-6. The company covers airfare, hotel accomodations, $l,OOO in travelers checks, most meals, transportation costs and prize taxes. The company also provides VISA souvenirs, plus several VISA-sponsored events, including a cocktail party to welcome the winners. "They're making us feel like real VIPs," Peterson said. Peterson said VISA also provides bilingual escorts at the hotel and during motor transfers, which Peterson said he will use, because he doesn't speak French. He added, however, that he knows one important word. "I know beer," Peterson said, chuckling. "It's the same in all languages."
