CAPITAL TIMES, April 5, 1991 Fun in the sun Campus celebrates solar equinox Elin Marcel Capital Times Staff College students love to sun their buns, but the Solar Equinox Celebration at the engineering lab on Mar. 21 revealed a different kind of sun worship. During the celebration, which was supported by the Student Activities Center, students watched films, read about solar energy, poked inside an electric car, and munched solar-cooked hot dogs. A solar equinox, (called vernal in the spring and autumnal in the fall) is the midpoint between the low and high points of the sun, the winter and summer solstices, said Andy Lau, associate professor of engineering technology. But why the celebration? "To try to get people to learn more about solar energy," Lau said. "To let people know we're doing research in solar energy, and to promote classes in solar energy." "We need to regenerate an understanding of nature," Lau said. Dane Fink, a junior mechanical engineering major from Reading, has a personal interest in solar energy.
