Earth EARTH DAY Penn State Harrisburg will celebrate Earth Day 1990 with several events held throughout the week of April 16--22. All events are open to the community. The goal of Penn State Harrisburg--an active member of the Capital Region Earth Week Coalition--is to make the community aware of environmental conservation and recycling. Events on campus held throughout the week include an outside sculpture display by Pennsylvania sculptors, a student art display, Earth Day t-shirt sales, an aluminum recycling contest, a compost display, environmental video presentations, a rain forest display, a recycling drive, an environmental workshop, and an Earth Day picnic with entertainment, tree planting, and sculpture building. According to Andy Lau, Assistant Professor of Engineering and a coordinator of the Capital Region Earth Week Coalition, making the community aware of environmental conservation and recycling is the aim of Earth Day 1990 at Penn State Harrisburg. Detailed information about the upcoming events will be featured in the This Week bulletin and on flyers and bulletin boards around campus. On Thursday, April 19, there will be a campus picnic in the Sculpture Garden. After the picnic, you may choose to participate in these events: tree planting and creating a display with aluminum cans. This is where YOU come in Campus Happenings HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR 1 MONTH—JULY OR AUGUST Educational Foundation for Children Abroad (EFCA) is a nonprofit Organization for cultural exchange. EFCA students are between 15 and 18 years of age, speak English, have successfully completed a screening process, and have insurance coverage as well as their own spending money. Each student comes for one month, either July or August. Most of the students are French. The students are coming to practice their English and to experience first-hand the American life-style. They are accompanied by a recommendation from their English teacher and are selected with great care for this stay. At any time during your hosting duties, the French bilingual chaperone residing in your area will be available as well as your EFCA Regional Director. They want everything to go as smoothly as possible for you and your student. • Friendships made in this manner last far beyond the four-week stay. This could easily be one of the most fun, enriching, and warm summer experiences involving your entire family ever! Share in a unique cultural experience to promote international understanding. PENN STATE HARRISBURG IS INCREASING ITS DIVERSITY COMMITMENT The Humanities Division of Penn State Harrisburg will sponsor two summer minority scholars to teach courses at the college for Summer 1990. The program is sponsored by the Equal Opportunity Planning Committee and the President's Opportunity Fund of University Park, which matches funds with the Offices of Summer Sessions and Penn State Harrisburg. DISHNER APPOINTED ASSOCIATE PROVOST AND DEAN OF FACULTY AT PENN STATE HARRISBURG Dr. Ruth Leventhal, Provost and Dean of Penn Sate Harrisburg announced the appointment of Dr. Ernest K. Dishner as the new associate provost and dean of faculty, effective May 1, 1990. April 4, 1990, CAPITAL TIMES Aluminum cans are needed! Prizes will be given to the individual or group who collects the most cans. The following cash prizes will be awarded: Ist prize sso, 2nd prize -$40, 3rd prize -$30, 4th prize -$25, and sth prize -$20. Everyone is invited to participate, both groups and individuals. To enter the contest simply turn in and weigh your cans at the Maintenance & Operations Building between 8 a.m. and sp.m. each day. All contestants have until the deadline of April 17 to collect as many cans possible. If temporary storage space is needed to house your collection, contact Janet Widoff in 212 Olmsted Building. Begin collecting aluminum now to earn some cold cash later! P.S. If you are currently collecting and contributing cans to a favorite cause, you may have your cans back after April 23 at the Maintenance & Operations Building. The announcement follows a national search and screening process conducted by a university-wide committee of representatives of faculty and administration. SUPPORT GROUP Alanon--a self-help support group for families and family members of persons with alcohol abuse problems-- will be forming a new group for people residing in the Middletown area. The group meets Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., Church of God, High Street (side entrance). HEALTH FAIR For the past several years, a Health Fair has been held on campus in the spring. Most of you know that Jean Kresge spearheaded this event; she spent many, many hours in its planning and implementation. For this academic year, no Student Affairs staff member was available to devote the time and effort to make this event successful therefore, they decided to eliminate the Health Fair this year. ON-CAMPUS There will be an Earth Day Picnic, 11 a.m., Thursday, April 19 in the Sculpture Garden. On Friday, April 20, beginning at 11 a.m., a caricature artist will be in the Main Lobby and beginning at 5:30 p.m. the Student Activities Awards Banquet will be held in the CUB. A Tug-of-War and Mud Volleyball begin at 1 p.m., on Saturday, April 21. From 2-5 p.m. there will be a concert by "Holiday Blues." All of the events will be held at the Meade Heights Pit. Awards Convocation begins at 2 p.m. in the CUB, Sunday, April 22. A Twister Contest at sp.m. followed by the Rites of Spring Awards Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. will be held at the dorms. The movie "Lethal Weapon II" will be shown at 8 p.m. in the 'Dining Hall. Pizzas, subs, sodas and popcorn will be served at various events. T-shirts with the Earth Day logo will be given out to six lucky students.
