Page 8 I want to say a few words about teaching. I'm always amazed when people, usually older people, say that the country is going down the drain. That the youth of today is less responsible than the last generation and the gloom and doom that will follow when these people have positions of power. I think Socrates quoted those of his time saying the same thing. Teachers do not say this. It is an honor for me to stand before a class and attempt to pass on some of what I have learned in my lifetime. There are those moments when we all learn from each other. And that look when a new thought comes to mind, when you can tell you are reaching them, It is as exiliarating as any downhill or free fall. Teaching is different from any other job I have ever had (and I have had numerous jobs). It is a calling. You do not do it for the money, especially as a part-timer. Your reward is measured more than in dollars. It is a Johnny Appleseed factor, but instead of trees you are sowing ideas and concepts. You are taking part in the creation of the future and it is an awesome responsiblity. I really like and enjoy my students. All of those individual personalities. I wonder why they take a given class (especially when it is not required). I think a good teacher is more than someone who just discusses the text and then gives quizzes. A good teacher can be asked for directions in more than just a class, but approaches to that time frame with all the variables. The future. Our society has allowed the college degree to become the minium credential in a lot of areas and I'm not sure it is a good idea. We issue credits, but a good teacher assists in creating thinkers. As I look at fellow faculty, 90 percent of them feel as I do. They are dedicated professionals. My persepective comes from being able to view similar departments at the same time. I teach communications classes at Penn State/Harrisburg, Shippensburg and Elizabethtown. There is a common thread. at these institutions. The students really do come first, these people view education as a sacred trust, something that carries us from here to there. I guess my point is that I am proud to be doing what I am doing and that the future is in good hands. If you haven't caught the most recent offering at Harrisburg Community Theatre you are missing a gem. It is a Woody Allen comedy, "Play it Again, Sam." Particularly strong is Les Zeiders as Bogart. Zeiders brings the screen idol to life better than most and the sharp dialogue as he coaches Allan Felix (played by Craig Stouffer) is a pleasure to experience. I read the review of this play by Tony Perry of the Sunday-Patriot News who was less than complementary of the work. Frankly, I don't know where that paper gets its reviewers. Sharon Johnson is not a mainstream movie-goer and Perry writes like he just started going to live performances a month ago. Get someone who enjoys more that the heavy stuff. They can't all be Fanny and Alexander or The Crucible. Play It Again, Sam runs through April 12 and you can make reservations by calling HCT at 238-7381. This is one of those things you should clip and put in your wallet. It is the only wise thing that Calvin Coolidge ever said and I rediscovered it in Inquirer Magazine last Sunday. "Persistence. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded geinus is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. ASM to Host Forum on Software Piracy and Computer Fraud By Kathleen Riley-King Penn State at Harrisburg's student chapter of ASM (Association for Systems Management) invites everyone on campus to attend a forum on software piracy and computer fraud in educational institutions. A video will be shown, and someone from the administration will speak on the university's position on the subject. The forum will be held later this month. The date of the forum will be posted on the calendar outside the Computer Center. Ask Mr. Foster ************** ************ Is that true, er what. By Alan Foster Capital Times By Mike Camilli The college basketball season ended with a bang last Monday as Indiana edged Syracuse by one point. Even though Syracuse lost, they played an exceptional game with an all-star performance by the young freshman from Michigan, Derrick Coleman. But the most spectacular performance was by Bobby Knight, who didn't lose his temper the entire game. On the regional level, the Capital Campus basketball team (12-11 for the regular season) took third place in post-season conference action. Brian Gauger was named "Coach of the Year" by the conference after leading the team to its best season since the mid-19705. The campus baseball team is off to a fantastic start with a record of 10-1. The team is led by tri-captains Greg Kindeg (catcher), Frank Popp (short stop, pitcher), and Brian Ritz (first base). The team's victories include a Las Vegas Nite To Be Held At Penn State Las Vegas Nite will be held at Penn State, Harrisburg on Thursday, April 16 from 6:00 to 9:00 in the CUB. Camilli On Sports spectacular extra-innings win against St. Mary's in Maryland The team is coached by Ron Melchiorre. Well, the professional basket ball season will soon be coming to a close. A lot of people have been asking me who's going to win the NBA Championship. The answer is the De troit Pistons in seven games over the Lakers. Now picking the Stanley Cup winner is tougher, but I'm going to say it will be the Red Wings over the Flyers in six. And as long as I'm giving out predictions, for the World Series it will be the Tigers over the Phillies, despite the Lance Parrish trade. For all you runners, The Mid dletown Lions' four-mile run is coming up on April 11.
