Page 12 Business Students: Is Anyone Out There? By Kathleen Riley-King To those Business students who did attend the Business forum(s) and to those who took the time to answer the Business survey--thank you and please ignore the following. Where are all you Busi-ness students? I got THREE responses to the Business survey that was printed in the last issue of the Capital Times. This indicates to me that: 1) you do not read the paper, 2) you have nothing to say, or 3) you are apathetic. If you do not read the paper, you will not be reading this. I know the problem is not a lack of something to say. I heard griping about the Business division the first day I naively walked into Capital College. *it 4 1 4 1 .***********41 1 4 41***************** 4 4-444 jg If you want * * Business Survey *chan g e, you are going to * * *have to get together and *fight for it. Even the administration gave you two chances. Who responds? A handful, perhaps, out of nearly 600 undergraduate Business students! So I conclude, and I believe justifiably so, that you are apathetic. Frankly, I am surprised to find so much apathy in a school of above-average stu dents whose average age is 27 or 28 years. I would like to ask: If you don't at least stand up for yourselves, don't you deserve the grief you feel you are getting? If you do not care that you are paying money (and lots of it) for something you are dissatisfied with, I suggest that you consider a major other than a Business major. Pregnant? Considering Adoption? Contrary to popular belief, domestic violence is not a blue collar crime. According to one Women in Crisis statistic, approximately 25% of abused women are college educated. Philadelphia Magazine published an article in 1984 that depicted domestic violence as a white collar crime. The article says that abusers aren't losers, and "they rarely fit the stereotype of the man who's kicked around by the outside world and relieves his frustrations by kicking his wife. Rather they tend to be charming and articulate." Another Time magazine statistic states that battery is the single major cause of injury to women, more significant than auto accidents, rapes, or muggings. Domestic violence can happen to any woman. According to WIC spokeswoman, Peggy Lorrah, there is no common link or profile that women that are abused share. Instead, women that have been abused over a prolonged period of time take on a shared set of characteristics that focus around survival. "More 'than looking at these women as victims, we should look at them as survivors for that is what they have really learned how to do." Giovanni (continued from pg. 1) made it rather than try to get more of us there," she told them to "Ask yourself 'how can I make it happen?'" Giovanni related the atmosphere when Hurricane Camille ripped through Mississippi. Suddenly Mississippi became integrated, while Whites and Blacks worked side by side. Why? "Because we had us a tragedy," she remembered. "We are so stupid, we won't come together until something happens. "I come from a group of people who are a loving people," Giovanni said adding that even though they were enslaved and bitterly abused, Blacks have risen above what has been. "We've said to the Whites, we will forgive you. Now it's up to White America to forgive itself. We need to go forward together." When I sit down my toes look like they're as far away as Philadelphia. I did see some incredibly agile people there. One girl was so limber that if she could bend her head a little bit more foward she wouldn't need her boyfriend anymore. The final song ended and everybody cheered. I would have cheered too if I had the energy. I know I must have made a lot of gain, because I had a lot of pain. Actually it was fun in a masochistic way.
