Campus soccer fans could have
something to look forward to this
Newly organized and under the
direction of a new coach, the
Capitol soccer team has strarted
its season, for the first time in
actual league play.
Last year, soccer players on
campus had to settle for exhibi
tion play as a non-sanctioned
club, and this year’s team cap
tains feel the transition has af
fected player attitude.
“We take more pride in the
way we play,’’ said co-captain
Rob Rejmaniak, “entry into
NAIA District 19 has given us
new goals to aim for.”
Co-captain Mitch Malecky said,
“With a full time coach, we work
better at practices which leads to
more player development.”
Ten players return from last
year, including forward Tom
Weidmann and Fullback Barry
Sullivan who are expected to have
outstanding seasons.
According to Co-captain, Joe
Dean, “Injuries could be a pro
blem to add to .existing setbacks,
and one Outstanding center for
ward has lost eligibility. Our
realistic goal is for a .500
team captain, Dave Wicks.
The remaining Capitol Campus
harriers are Dan Miller, Brian
Gauger, Dave McNamara, Mike
Markle, A 1 Feiertag, Jeff Carroll,
and Dave Fitzgerald.

of both old and new members,

‘lt was designed to be more of
a cross country than road race,
for more interesting running,’
Smitley said.
With the help of the
maintenance crew, Smitley spent
five weeks this summer designing
and building the new track. It
consists of one-half campus runn
ing, and one-half wooded area
track.
Last year’s cross country team
won the Keystone Athletic Con
ference, and placed fourth in the
National Association of Inter
collegiate Athletics (NAIA)
District 19 championships.
District 19 is made up of 16
teams from Eastern Pennsylvania,
Delaware, and northern
Maryland.
The team works out every day,
logging 50 practice miles a week
with several team members runn
ing on their own time when class
schedules or other commitments
conflict with practice times.
The remaining six season meets
are scheduled every Saturday
through the end of October, in
cluding a backyard rivalry meet
with Elizabethtown College on
Wednesday, October 19 at
Capitol.
