Harriers open season in quad meet By Jeanne Ballets The 1983 Capitol Campus cross country team placed second overall in its first season competi tion Saturday in a quad-meet with Lincoln University, Cabrini College, and Penn State Hazleton Campus. Overall results of the five-mile meet were Lincoln University first; Capitol Campus, second; Hazleton Campus, third; and Cabrini College fourth. Sammie Jones of Lincoln was the first runner to cross the finish line, followed by Hazleton’s Jim Rinker. Joel Hager was Capitol’s first runner to finish, placing third. Other Capitol runners who placed in the meet were Brian Bachman, Dave Wicks, Jerry Trently, and Greg Nissley, finishing sth, 7th, 14th, and 15th, respectively. This year’s Capitol Campus team is made up of four returning members from last year, and eight new runners. Even so, Coach Bud Smitley feels the team will be very competitive. ‘They're as good as last year’s team...very strong in spirit.” said Soccer team debuts in league competition By Angelo Vecchio Campus soccer fans could have something to look forward to this Newly organized and under the direction of a new coach, the Capitol soccer team has strarted its season, for the first time in actual league play. Last year, soccer players on campus had to settle for exhibi tion play as a non-sanctioned club, and this year’s team cap tains feel the transition has af fected player attitude. “We take more pride in the way we play,’’ said co-captain Rob Rejmaniak, “entry into NAIA District 19 has given us new goals to aim for.” Co-captain Mitch Malecky said, “With a full time coach, we work better at practices which leads to more player development.” Ten players return from last year, including forward Tom Weidmann and Fullback Barry Sullivan who are expected to have outstanding seasons. According to Co-captain, Joe Dean, “Injuries could be a pro blem to add to .existing setbacks, and one Outstanding center for ward has lost eligibility. Our realistic goal is for a .500 team captain, Dave Wicks. The remaining Capitol Campus harriers are Dan Miller, Brian Gauger, Dave McNamara, Mike Markle, A 1 Feiertag, Jeff Carroll, and Dave Fitzgerald. The new five-mile track winds through the campus, along the woods of Meade Heights, across three streams, and up several ramped hills. 6-2. Valley Forge Bible College top ‘lt was designed to be more of a cross country than road race, for more interesting running,’ Smitley said. With the help of the maintenance crew, Smitley spent five weeks this summer designing and building the new track. It consists of one-half campus runn ing, and one-half wooded area track. Last year’s cross country team won the Keystone Athletic Con ference, and placed fourth in the National Association of Inter collegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 19 championships. District 19 is made up of 16 teams from Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and northern Maryland. The team works out every day, logging 50 practice miles a week with several team members runn ing on their own time when class schedules or other commitments conflict with practice times. The remaining six season meets are scheduled every Saturday through the end of October, in cluding a backyard rivalry meet with Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, October 19 at Capitol. ped Capitol 4-1 in a rain shorten ed contest in the season’s second game.
