Rock Talk By Gene McGovern It seemed for quite a long while that the world of rock was deteriorating. There seemed to be a lack of the excitement and enthusiasm that was present from the late sixties through the mid-seventies. That trend was definitely reversed when, on August 26, the Rolling Stones announced at a press conference that they would tour the United States. The tour, slated to extend through mid-December, will hit 21 cities and was kicked off in Philadelphia on September 25-26. The 180,000 tickets for the two shows were sold ~in approxi mately 28 hours. When asked why the Stones were starting in Philadelphia, Mick Jagger simply responded, "Phila delphia is a beautiful city." I was one of the 180,000 lucky people to have had the privilege of seeing the Stones. There can be only one word used to describe their performance: Magnifi cent! They gave the rock world the kick in the ass it so badly needed. If you could have tapped the electricity in the air that day, you'd probably be able to run Detroit for a week. Bartenders in Philly said that they hadn't had so much excitement since the Phillies won the World Series. The Stones played for well over two hours, doing an array of songs from their early days and about half of the songs from their newest release, "Tattoo You." Jagger wore an Eagle's jacket, given to him by John Sciarra, during the second half of the show. He sang incredibly well and the band's movements were poetic. Highlighting the show were the songs, "Time is on my Side," "You Can't always Get What You Want," "Start It Up," "Honky Tonk Woman," "Hrown Sugar," and "Jumpin Jack Flash. ' The Stones Regular Registration Deadline 9/17/81 11/6/81 12/31/81 3 / 1 9/82 5/7/82 9/21/81 12/21/81 2/15/82 5/18/82 11/5/81 1/6/82 10/12/81 1/18/82 3/15/82 were simply incredible. Any rock fan who hasn't experienced them hasn't experienced rock and roll. The Rolling Stones are simply the greatest rock band in the world today.
