The Art Association of Harrisburg's BAL MASQUE returns to downtown
Harrisburg for the first time since the old Penn Harris Hotel was torn down, when
"PARTY IN PENN'S WOODS" is held in the Atrium of Strawberry Square on
February 28. With "PARTY IN PENN'S WOODS" as the theme, the Art
Association has chosen to celebrate the Pennsylvania Tricentennary and the
300th anniversary of the signing of William Penn's Charter.
The Ball Masque, Harrisburg's answer to New Orleans' Mardi Gras, will begin
at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, and will continue until 1 a.m., with dancing to
the music of Herm Miller's orchestra and its Big Band Sound. Emcee will be Jim
Sinkovitz of WHP . . . Paul Beer, Harrisburg Patriot/News columnist, will be
honorary chairman. A cash bar will benefit Harrisburg River Rescue. Food,
arranged by committee chairman Patricia Treon, will be served picnic style in
keeping with the "Penn's Woods" theme.
Costumes will be the featured attraction of the evening, with prizes awarded
in the categories of Singles, Couples, and Groups. Paintings by Association
member artists will constitute the prizes. Costumes should carry through the
theme of 300 years of Pennsylvania History . . . up to and including the present
time. Formal attire is also appropriate.
Tickets cost $15.00 per person this year: they will go on sale early in February
at Rainbow Entertainment in Strawberry Square, at the People Place at 301
Market Street, and at the Association office at 21 N. Front Street, Harrisburg.
Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the Bal, February 28.1%e Bal
is open to both members and non-members -- everyone is welcome!
Leslie Carricato and Ann Marie Lukesh are Bal co-chairmen. Charles Schulz,
decorations chairman, is in charge of transforming Strawberry Square's Atrium
into Penn's Woods. Leo Gilroy is in charge of entertainment. Also on the Bal's
planning task force are: Mrs. Robert Reese, Carrie Thomas, Mary Davis, Karl
Foster, Bernadette Barratini, Marybeth Walkowiak, and David Lenker.
